A Critical Look At Moral Values

Humility is a quality of being modest and courteously respectful of others. It is the opposite of aggressiveness, arrogance, boastfulness, and pride. When one is humble, he considers others first before himself. It is indeed the most cherished virtue in most religions since humility is what makes us go to our God to seek forgiveness for sins committed or ask for blessings. Humility is very important in our dealings with our family, friends, organizations and the society at large. Humility is very essential when leading people. Does humility come naturally to us or we have to nurture it? This question is debatable but from my point of view, Humility can be nurtured or learned though there are people who are naturally more humble. Everybody who is willing to be humble can learn to be humble. In this case, one will have to avoid circumstances that might not make him appear humble. Typical example is pride. How do we react when we are praised by others? Pride comes in so many forms; one can show an act of pride by viewing himself as more important than others, by always acting in a manner that depicts he is in control of everything, when one boast about things he has achieved in life etc. In this vain, we are not saying do not rejoice in what you have been able to achieve in life. The manner you go about rejoicing might show a sign of pride if not handled with care. In order to avoid this, always credit people who help you in achieving things and most importantly refer all your achievements and success to God. How do we treat people who are in lesser positions than ours? Another important aspect to consider in our effort of being humble is to mind the way e treat people. Day in day out, we come across people in our places of work, organizations, in buses, food joints, etc. We need to treat people in a respectable manner irrespective of their social status, rank in organizations or at work places. When I was growing up, I learnt a child had to give his seat to the elderly when they board a bus together. Do we see this happening in our generation? Both the elderly and the young have thrown the need to be humble in all circumstances due to our technological world. Humility should make either the elderly or the young give up their seat for the other. In summary, Humility is a virtue that should be possessed by all whether it comes naturally or not. Here are some tips on how you can cultivate this virtue which God cherishes most: 1. Recognize virtues and talents that others possess, particularly those that surpass one's own, and giving due honour to them. 2. Respect everybody on the surface of this earth irrespective of the status in the society. Always remember: Knowing alone is not enough, we must apply.
