Striking Doctors: Government Inconsistent With Us

The striking doctors are accusing government of frustrating the ongoing negotiation processes aimed at ending their strike. The president of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr. Adom Winful, has said government officials on two occasions withdrew two separate proposals to end their action. They called me to Accra that there is an emergency meeting and I drove over, Dr. Winful said. When I got there and they told me the proposal discussed last Friday has been taken off the table because they do not think it is feasible. "They brought another proposal, discussing it for five minutes; they tell me that it is also not feasible. When I asked them what they are giving me as your proposal for discussion by the GMA, they tell me there is nothing. "This is the tactics theyve been playing with us, he stated. Dr. Winful added that it was frustrating that government remains inconsistent with its position and proposals, a situation he said could worsen the current strike by the doctors. The GMA boss maintained that the striking doctors will continue with the action until their concerns are addressed. Meanwhile, the striking doctors and officials of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission are expected to meet the National Labour Commission to continue deliberations on Monday. The Labour Commission has said that it hopes its role as an arbiter will help resolve issues quickly. Dr. Winful has already told Citi News his outfit will attend the meeting. The acting Minister for Health, Haruna Iddrisu in an earlier interview with Citi News urged the doctors to heed to President Mills call to end the strike while negotiations continue.
