22-Year-Old Ugandan Millionaire Jailed For Fraud

The Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala last week remanded a 22-year-old businesswoman, for allegedly embezzling about Shs11 billion from a real estate company where she was a co-director. The presiding chief magistrate, Ms Irene Akankwasa, who concurred with the prosecution, denied granting Bad Black bail for fear that she would jump it once granted, citing the large sums of money involved. I cant consider granting her bail since the subject matter is big; which may make the accused (Bad Black) jump bail. The accused is remanded to Luzira Prison until November 3, held Magistrate Akankwasa. The magistrate asked the prosecution led by Paul Lakidi to expeditiously finish up with the investigations and have her stand trial. I am Not Guilty Bad Black denied the charges upon plea taking. Her woes started last Wednesday when police detained her at the CID headquarters at Kibuli after she had reportedly gone to check on her boyfriend Medi Ssetongo who was detained there. She was held by police on allegations that she had jumped the police bond granted to her as police investigated her case, which investigations began in July. She was later transferred to Central police Station in Kampala where she spent a night. Bad Black was again taken back to the CID offices yesterday morning and later taken to the Anti-Corruption Court where she was formally charged. According to the charge sheet, Bad Black and others still at large between September 2010 and May 2011, while a co-director of Daveshan Development Company Ltd stole $3,824,130 (Shs11b), which came into her possession by virtue of her employment. The said company deals in real estate and is owned by Mr David Greenhagh. Bad Black, who is known for her lavish lifestyle mainly characterised by frequenting night clubs and social places, was swarmed by her friends at court. She was represented by Mr. David Balodemu. Shortly after court, Bad Black said she was not afraid of being jailed. She said she has been Mr. Greenhaghs girlfriend for three years and that he filed the case against her because he (Mr. Greenhagh) was accusing her of infidelity. She vowed to open up a suit against him once out of jail. Her lawyers also promised to reapply for bail today and have her out of jail. The arrest comes amid public anxiety to establish the origin of the money the accused has been splashing at night clubs in the recent past. Bad Black ever since shooting to the limelight early this year has been showing off with a luxurious lifestyle, including treating patrons at Kampala night clubs to free drinks.
