Ken Cappuccino Agyepong Steals Show

Former chairman of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Kennedy Cappuccino Agyepong, attracted commendations from stakeholders and media men at the launch of Azumah Nelsons book last Wednesday when he made a very generous donation of $20,000 to the boxing professors foundation. The ex-Kotoko boss, fondly called Capo, also bought 1,000 copies of Azumah Nelsons book entitled, 12 Rounds of Boxing and Life, whose proceeds would go to the Azumah Nelson Foundation, which is building a sports academy for underprivileged children. The book launch took place at the Accra Girls High School and was attended by Minister of Sports Clement Humado and Chief Executive of the National Sports Authority (NSA) Worlanyo Agrah among other dignitaries. As a native of Kwahu in the Eastern Region, Mr Agyepong indicated that he would send the 1,000 copies he bought to the area to be distributed to students there, so that they could learn from the example of Azumah Nelson. Through humility, tenacity of purpose and discipline, the champ (Azumah Nelson), who was from a humble background, has become a renowned international figure. I want the children in Kwahu, where I come from, to know that they can also make it in their chosen careers if they stick to these principles. I urge all corporate bodies and individuals, who can afford it, to buy this book in bulk to distribute to our young students to read, as it can inspire them to reach their goals, said Mr Agyepong, who is also the CEO of Kenpong Constructions, a civil engineering company that specializes in the laying of fibre-optic cables and copper. In an interview with Daily Guide Sports, Azumah Nelson expressed appreciation to all those who graced the book launch, and stressed that the project is very important to him. We need to start the academy for the needy children, he said, adding that he was guided by a Divine inspiration to start the project. I hope the churches will come on board, because what we are doing is in line with their work. If God loves us and He has blessed us, we need to also show love to the needy. Some of us have been there before, so we know what it feels like to be disadvantaged, the boxing professor added. He praised Kennedy Agyepong for the $20,000 donation, and expressed the hope that others will emulate the latters gesture. The Sports Minister, Hon Humado, also bought 1,000 copies of the book, with the intention of sending it to the Volta Region for distribution among students. The MC of the programme was Kweku Sintim Misa aka KSM. Azumah Nelson was a three-time world boxing champion, holding the WBC featherweight and super featherweight titles at different times. His high-profile opponents during his heydays included Marcos Villasana, Pernell Whitaker, and lifelong rival Jeff Fenech. Sixteen years after their last meeting, Nelson (then 49) and Fenech (then 44) fought in Australia on June 24, 2008, with Jeff Fenech winning a majority decision. Azumah Nelson is widely recognized by boxing fans and critics as the greatest fighter ever to come out of Ghana and indeed, Africa. He was selected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame on January 8, 2004, and inducted on June 13, 2004. He is also a member of the World Boxing Hall of Fame.
