Calls For Abolishment Of CSSPS "Premature" - Education Minister

The Minister of Education Betty Mould Iddrisu has described calls for the abolishment of the Computerized School Selection and Placement Systems (CSSPS) as premature. According to the education minister, thorough deliberations and discussions would be held to solve the many challenges that characterised this year's placements. The Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference has called on the government to immediately abolish the CSSPS due to the irregularities that has engulfed this years placements. They said most students were still at home waiting to know which schools to attend, adding that there appears to be more corruption, confusion and inefficiency in this system than the former one. It observed that the massive failure at this years Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the inefficiencies of the CSSPS indicate that the Ghana government is not listening to the people. However, speaking in an interview on Joy FM on Monday, Mrs. Iddrisu outrightly rejected the call for the CSSPS to be abolished. She also added that government would not revert the three-year SHS system to the previous four-year duration introduced under the erstwhile Kufuor administration. Meanwhile, the Director in Charge of the Computerized Schools Selection and Placement System, Samuel Oppong, has also rejected the call for the system to be abolished, but welcomes calls for it to be reviewed. According to Mr. Oppong, the call by the Ghana Catholic Bishops is ridiculous. He explained that this years placement process faced several challenges primarily because of the re-introduction of the 30 per cent catchment area allocation system coupled with the delay in the release of BECE results by the West African Examinations Council. He, however, said such challenges are being addressed to improve upon the process in the future.
