20 'Okada' Riders Arrested

The Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday morning arrested some traffic offenders and over 20 motor riders on the Mallam-Kasoa Highway. The offenders will be screened and prosecuted for various offences during a special operation at the Mallam Junction. Some of the motorcycle riders were using their bikes for commercial purposes popularly known as Okada and considered illegal in Ghana, while others were riding without a license. The arrests were made after a reactive force swoop in the area. The group was also there to help in the direction of heavy traffic that had bedeviled the road due to the construction of the highway. The Head of Research and Education at the national MTTU, ASP Alexander Obeng told Citi News they will continue to arrest people if they do not comply with road laws. We are impounding those who drive, facing on-coming cars with their hazard lights on. It is not permitted under the road law, ASP Obeng explained. We know that Citi FM has been on our case about the misuse of motorcycles in the city, so this is part of our strategy. We will screen them and possibly take them to the motor court. He also said that after two months if the culprits do not show up for prosecution and collection of their cycles, they will be prosecuted. ASP Obeng added: We are going to court. If they dont come and the motor cycles remain in our yard we will trigger the LI 704 that is disposal of public property. This [LI 704] comes under police custody and after two months, we will publicise it and go through the necessary procedures at the police headquarters. We then publicly auction the motorcycles." The arrests took place when the Citi Breakfast Show hit the streets of Accra to monitor the disturbing traffic situation.
