A CONFIDENT Comfort Adubea Adjei, wife of the chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), was given the shock of her political life when she was defeated in the Akropong constituency primary of the party in the Eastern region by the constituency women�s organizer, Margaret Ansah. The election in the Akropong constituency of the Eastern region was held alongside those in the northern sector, over the weekend because, the final funeral rites of the late father of Mrs Comfort Adubea Adjei would take place on the same date that the southern sector primaries would take place. The change of date was to enable her to mourn her father. In a keenly-contested primary held at St Mary�s School at Okorase in the constituency, Margaret Ansah edged past Mrs Adjei, also the constituency chairperson, with just two votes. Margaret Ansah had 205 votes and Comfort Adubea Adjei 203 in a contest supervised by the regional and constituency executive members with the party. The national chairman, Dr Kwabena Adjei, was �spying� from a nearby guest house at Okorase near Koforidua. The defeat of the national chairman�s wife made all �big� men from Accra and the region who, were there to give her moral support, dejected, as it threw a well-planned post election victory party at Amanokrom, hometown of Comfort Adubea, completely out of gear. DAILY GUIDE learnt that a cow had been slaughtered for the �big� party to be held at the residence of Mrs Adubea Adjei, with a live band on standby ready to entertain her supporters in an all-night party. The wife of Kofi Totobi-Quakyi, another �guru� in the NDC, Mrs Mabel Totobi-Quakyi, who was billed to contest in the all-women affair, bitterly complained about how the constituency executive members had aligned themselves with Mrs Adjei and made the playing field uneven for her (Mabel). She therefore withdrew from the race for the two to sort it out. After the mainly peaceful election, supporters of Comfort Adjei vowed to distance themselves from the campaign of Margaret Ansah. �We have already lost the elections with this candidate. We will never vote in the parliamentary elections but we will vote in the presidential elections,� some of Mrs Adjei�s supporters were heard saying. Margaret Ansah, in a post-election speech, thanked the delegates for the confidence reposed in her and described her victory as a reward for loyalty and commitment to the cause of the party in the constituency. Mrs Adjei also said she would continue to help the constituency in her capacity as the chairperson. DAILY GUIDE investigations established that the vote against Mrs Comfort Adjei was a protest vote against the constituency officers who clearly showed their support for her because they were seen as the only people �enjoying� while those who had sacrificed for the party while the party was in opposition had been neglected. The southern sector primaries of the NDC, which would take place on Saturday, November 26, promise to be full of surprises.
