Unemployed Group Challenges Official Jobless Figures

The Unemployed Graduates Association of Ghana (UGAG) has dismissed governments pronouncements that it has secured employment for about 22. 5% of the registered unemployed, describing it as untrue and unacceptable. The Minister of Employment and Social Welfare, Hon. E. T Mensah on Tuesday stated that out of the 13,607 registered unemployed persons, only 3,072 were placed in gainful positions. By the time of October 2011, the labour department had registered 13,607 applicants looking for jobs," Hon. Mensah said. Out of the total number, the labour department was able to place 3,072 made up of 2,489 males and 583 females into gainful employment, he added. However, the spokesperson of UGAG, Justice Antwi has dismissed the official figures. According to Antwi, the data from the employment ministry is not credible and unreliable stating that figures available to them indicate that over 65,000 graduates are unemployed. He has, however, challenged the ministry to come out and prove its claim. It is unacceptable because the data is not credible, it is not reliable, he said. From what we have over 65,000 are unemployed and they have joined the association that we have formed so this figure is not credible and we would not accept it.
