The General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu-Nketia has warned any party member interested in going independent during the 2012 parliamentary and presidential elections to count him or herself out of the NDC.
General Mosquito, as he is affectionately called in the local media, said the party will not tolerate any disgruntled member who decides to stand as an independent candidate in constituencies where the NDC has fielded candidates.
He said such stance amounts to double standards and since the constitution of the party openly frowns on that he is serving notice to prospective independent candidates from the party to be ready to severe their relationship with the ruling party.
�There is always an option of going independent,� Asiedu-Nketia told party members. �But if you go independent you must be fully aware of the implications because the right of association is a fundamental human right and at any point in time there are some who after every opportunity has been given, if they decide out of their free will to go independent then the implication is that according to our constitution you cannot belong to two political parties. �
The NDC opened nominations for the parliamentary race in all constituencies where they have sitting MPs on Thursday. Some big names including a deputy Information Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a deputy Transport Minister, Dzifa Ativor, a deputy Finance Minister Fiifi Kwetey amongst others have declared their bids.
