A young Fulani woman aged 20 has allegedly committed suicide to avoid an arranged marriage to an old man.
The deceased simply known as Mariam and her father were believed to have left Gonokrom in the Western Region on Tuesday, arriving in Tamale in the night, when she allegedly jumped from the truck on which were traveling to her death.
DSP Maama Arhin, Northern Regional Crime Officer, who disclosed this in an interview with the GNA on Wednesday, said the deceased was a student in Ivory Coast but her parents wanted to remove her from school and give her out for marriage.
He said the body of the deceased had since been deposited at the Tamale Teaching Hospital mortuary.
DSP Arhin said his Office had been inundated with calls from several embassies due to an earlier report made by a local FM station in Tamale that the girl was of Asian or Caucasian origin because of her fair complexion.
