A 28-year-old taxi driver, Eric Gyasi, was on Wednesday sentenced to 25 years imprisonment in hard labour by a Circuit Court in Cape Coast for causing harm and robbery.
He pleaded guilty to both counts and was convicted on his own pleas. The court presided over by Mrs Florence Kai Otoo sentenced him to four years for causing harm and 25 years for robbery and the sentences are to run concurrently.
Chief Inspector Francis Ockom told the Court that on November 21, Gyasi called one Bless Afalenu, a fellow cab driver in Assin Fosu, to pick him up from Juaso to Asssin Akonfodi to visit a friend and also send him back on hiring basis.
He said on reaching a spot near Assin Akonfodi Jehovah Witness Camp, the convict ordered Afalenu to hand over the car keys to him which he refused and shouted for help. Gyasi pulled out a cutlass from the side of his jeans trousers and inflicted deep cutlass wounds on the left hand of Afalenu.
Chief Inspector Ockom said Afalenu run out of the cab and the convict sped off with the car towards Akim Oda. He said while Gyasi was escaping with the taxi, the base of the cab got broken when he reached which forced him to park the vehicle and took out Afalenu�s mobile phone valued at GH�90.00, the car tape valued at GH�120.00 and GH�28.00.
He said after removing the items from the vehicle, the convict abandoned the vehicle but took its keys with him. The prosecutor said the driver reported the incident to the Police and the Aperade Police organized a search party that apprehended the convict at Dueko Town and handed him over to the Amanfo Police.
He said all the items Gyasi took from the vehicle were, retrieved.
