Only Seven Doctors Are Manning Health Facilities In Upper West

There are only seven public medical doctors currently working in the Upper West Region instead the required of 37 doctors needed to provide adequate quality healthcare to the people. �The �poor doctor situation� in the Region is disappointing because some hospitals in Accra had more than seven doctors manning one department but in our region it is never so, Dr. Alexis Nang-Beifubah, Upper Regional Director of Health Services�, said. Dr. Nang-Beifubah who addressing a �Meet the Press� (media encounter) in Wa attributed the refusal of doctors to accept postings to the Region to inadequate accommodation and lack of motivation to medical doctors among other issues. He called on district and municipal assemblies to pay more attention to the provision of decent accommodation for doctors and find a way of motivating those who had accepted to come and work in the Region. He suggested the establishment of a Regional Sponsorship Scheme with contributions from the various district assemblies for students who gain admission to the medical school to trained as doctors who must return to their home region to heal their sick.
