Ho To Get Sports Stadium

The Volta Regiona will soon be blessed with a Sports Stadium as part of efforts by the Government to promote the development of sports in the Region. The Regional capital, Ho and the Central Regional capital, Cape Coast are the latest cities after Sekondi, Western Region and Tamale, Northern Region to enjoy such facilities. Sekondi and Tamale each boast of ultra-modern 20,000 capacity Sports Stadia constructed during the Ghana 2008 Africa Cup of Nations. Clement Kofi Humado, Minister of Youth and Sports, addressing a 'Meet the Press' dialogue on Thursday, said his outfit is in the process of preparing 'term sheets' for the consideration of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning to source loans for the construction of the two stadiums in Cape Coast and Ho. He said the gesture is geared towards the provision of sporting facilities across the country for the development of sports. The Minister, however, remained silent on the capacity of the two stadia but hinted that it will boast of facilities of global standard. Mr Humado added that the Ministry has commenced work on 12 multipurpose courts through funding from mining firm, Anglo-Gold Ashanti. He said contracts for the construction of eight others will be awarded soon, which is also in line with the provision of sporting infrastructure at the grassroots level. On maintenance of sporting facilities, the Minister announced that work has commenced on the scoreboards and floodlights at the Accra Sports Stadium and the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi to put them in the right condition. The Minister also appealed to public-private partnership to address the issues of renovation as far as sporting facilities are concerned. Worlanyo Agra, Director-General of the National Sports Authority, (NSA) mentioned that the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex, Kaneshie will be given a face-lift to save it from collapse while measures are to be undertaking to rehabilitate the rusting structures of the Accra sports stadium.
