Police in Tamale have arrested Alale Nugri, a 27-year-old Fulani man claiming to be Ghanaian soldier, for unlawfully possessing military accoutrements. The suspect, who at the time of his arrest was also in possession of a locally-manufactured pistol, was dressed in a military camouflage uniform and loitering around Sakasaka, a suburb of the Tamale. According to the police, a senior military officer from the 6th Infantry Battalion (6BN) in Tamale spotted the suspect around the area and realized from his dressing he was not one of them. The said soldier immediately ordered Nugri�s arrest and handed him over to the police for further interrogation. But when the police tried interrogating him further, Nugri pretended to be deaf and dumb and failed to respond to any question posed. He only started responding to queries when a police officer on duty allegedly slapped him. According to Nugri, he was recruited into the service in Kumasi but could not tell which of the military installations he belonged. Upon further questioning, he claimed the uniform belonged to his father who was a resident of Kumasi. The police, in a bid to verify the authenticity of his claims, asked him to remove the uniform and in the process, a number of charms and amulets were found round his waist. Police have placed him behind bars and will process him for court to face charges of illegally possessing military accoutrements and deceit of public officer by posing as a military officer.
