Group Threatens "Indefinite Demo" Over Fuel Subsidy Removal

The Tema District of Labour of GTUC has asked government to as a matter of urgency restore the fuel subsidy and revert to the previous fuel prices by Monday 23 January or will embark on an indefinite demonstration. Chairman Wilson Agana, said the Tema District of Labour was surprised at the sudden announcement by government to increase fuel prices by 15 30 percent. He said the Tema District of Labour did not understand why government could slap such astronomical increases on poor Ghanaians, their families and the travelling public in the middle of Christmas. Speaking on the Citi Eyewitness on Wednesday, Wilson Agana stated that government unilaterally made the announcement without consulting the stakeholders, especially the Ghana Trades Union (GTUC). The Tema District of Labour has also charged Government to explain to Ghanaians how much the country makes on the hedging policy and the amount so far accumulated on the stabilization fund. Mr Agana added that if the governments only option is to remove the subsidy, then government is bereft of ideas and does not appear to have solutions that are worth governing a nation.
