We Dont Owe MTN Fumes At Anas ECG Expos

Telecoms giant MTN has said reports citing it as one of the big companies that have defaulted in the payment of electricity bills since November 2011 are untrue. Some big companies have been cited for defaulting in the payment of electricity bills to the tune of over GhC 400 million. This was uncovered during an investigative work by ace journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas of the New Crusading Guide newspaper in a piece that sought to uncover corrupt practices at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). Companies from the banking and telecoms sector amongst others were implicated in the piece that said most of them had not paid as at November 2011. It mentioned three telecom operators, Airtel, MTN and Vodafone. According to the story, MTN owes about GH 349,811. 19 in total debt at its Accra West, Kumasi West and Tema outfits. Reacting to the allegations, the Corporate Affairs Manager of MTN, Cynthia Lumor, told Citi Business News MTN has no outstanding electricity bills. She said we have done a quick check since we listened to the report and we dont have past due reports from our records. The only outstanding bills that we have are bills that were received in the last six weeks or so, we then have to reconcile and then process payment once there is no dispute over the bill. Averagely, we pay ECG about two million Ghana cedis per month and we make sure that those bills as long as they are undisputed are paid on time. I can confidently say we have no outstanding overdue bills, Lumor added. She said MTN will take up the issue with the ECG.
