Osafo-Maafo Must Be Praised ...

A former Attorney General under the erstwhile Kufuor administration, Joe Ghartey has said he will be surprised if the police arrest the former Finance Minister Yaw Osafo-Maafo. He said the former finance minister deserves to be praised and not to be condemned because he helped build the Essipong and Tamale Sports stadia below the cost that was expected. I do not think that he has been involved in any criminality because these people were quoting a figure of 60 million euros and he built the stadia for 38 million dollars. The stadia are there you can see them in Takoradi and Tamale, Mr. Ghartey said. He added that the duty of a minister is to get the best possible deal for the government, for the country and the people. The procurement act says so, that is the whole purpose of procurement. Hon. Ghartey also said recent happenings in the Alfred Woyome scandal should serve as a caution to politicians. According to him, politicians who hide under innocence to do corrupt deals would be exposed eventually. He said politicians who criticise when out of power should be careful as they will also be criticised when in power. What is happening should tell something to politicians rather than the civil servants. All politicians regardless of political position must be careful, the former AG said. He added that Ghanaians should brace themselves for more revelations after the arrest of some of the people indicted in the Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO) interim report. According to him, the Presidents denial of the payment and the mentioning in the report that President Mills cautioned that the payment should not be made on two occasions makes the issue a contradictory one.
