A group calling itself the �Free Woyome Campaign Movement� (FWCM) is accusing government of interfering with the rule of law. The group is also accusing some key members in the National Democratic Congress of being behind the arrest and refusal of a court to grant bail to Alfred Agbesi Woyome for his alleged complicity in the payment of the controversial GH�51 million judgment debt. Leader of the FWCM, David Tamakloe, argues Woyome�s continuous detention in police custody is unlawful and deserves to have been granted bail because the charges preferred against him are only second degree felonies. The FWCM is a group which has been fighting for the immediate release of the embattled NDC guru. The NDC bankroller, who is at the centre of the controversial judgment debt saga, together with two others, have been placed in police custody for allegedly defrauding the state to the tune of GH�51.2 million. The two are a Chief State Attorney, Samuel Nerquaye-Tetteh, and the Director of Legal Services, Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning (MOFEP), Paul Asimenu. A third accused person, Mr Nerquaye-Tetteh�s wife, Gifty Nerquaye-Tetteh, into whose account Woyome paid GH�400,000, was granted bail in the sum of GH�500,000 with two sureties. She was also ordered to report herself to the police twice a week. Woyome pleaded not guilty to three counts of conspiracy, defrauding by false pretence and corrupting a public officer. Nerquaye-Tetteh was charged with two counts of conspiracy and corruption of a public officer. He pleaded not guilty to the offence, while his wife faced one count of abetment of crime. Asimenu, on the other hand, pleaded not guilty to one count of abetment of crime. The trial judge, Justice John Ajet-Nasam, however, refused Woyome bail on Monday. The case will be reheard on February 13. Speaking in an interview during Peace FM News@6pm, the Leader of the FWCM said portions of the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) Interim Report fuels the belief that there are some people in government manipulating events surrounding the arrest of the businessman. Questioning the Mills� administration�s decision to single out only Mr. Woyome in the entire scandal when in fact key government officials have been implicated in the saga, David Tamakloe decried attempts to cover up for some government officials involved in the scandal. ��We are not surprised that he has been remanded and refused bail. We got the information long ago that he was going to be refused bail and so we are not surprised�we know that there are some key people in the NDC who are behind this and we are going to organize a press conference today to expose those people. We have realized that government is interfering with the rule of law�� he said.
