Fresh Violence Erupts At Buipe...5 Shot

Peacefmonline can confirm that at least five people have suffered gun-shot wounds following the eruption of fresh violence in the Central Gonja district of Buipe in the Northern Region. The incidence occurred at a community called Yipala near the Buipe toll bridge. Details of the incident are still sketchy but Dr Ahmed Jinapor, Spokesperson for the Buipe Traditional Area, who confirmed the report in an interview with Peacefmonline, disclosed that one of the five victims include Ensowura Alhassan, the Chief Linguist to the Buipewura, Mahama Abdulai Jinapor II. Narrating what happened, he said the victims were ambushed and shot at whiles returning from an errand carried out on behalf of the Buipewura in connection with this years Damba festival. "...a faction laying claim to the Buipe skin caused to be beaten the traditional gong gong...to announce the performance of rites preceding the traditional Damba festival...the Buipewura sent emissaries to report the infraction to the police, but they were waylaid and shot at," he recounted. Dr. Abdulai Jinapor urged the security agencies including the Regional Police commander and the district commander to do all they can to bring to book the perpetrates of the "criminal" act since they are known individuals within the community. We know the individuals who did that. We are going to report it to the police...but the police have to do their job...This is not about chieftaincy, it is about the rule of law, its a criminal act, he said.
