Former Sports Minister in the erstwhile Kufuor administration, Yaw Osafo Maafo has categorically denied the allegation that beleaguered NDC guru, Alfred Agbesi Woyome sponsored his failed presidential bid in the New Patriotic Party flagbearership contest for the 2008 elections. Managing Editor of the Al-Hajj newspaper, Alhaji Iddrisu Bature, asserted last week that the one-time Minister of Finance, under whose tenure Waterville secured the stadia contracts for the 2008 African Cup of Nations, was financially resourced by the NDC bankroller. Alhaji Bature claimed the former MP for Akim Oda openly identified the under fire NDC businessman as his godfather and financier during the launch of his presidential bid and was therefore surprised to see the opposition NPP jumping at the throat of Mr. Woyome in the controversial judgment debt saga when they have all benefited from the man in one way or the other. But speaking in an exclusive interview on HelloFM�s �Akoko Abon� political talk-show, Hon Osafo Marfo was emphatic in his denial that Mr Woyome financed his presidential campaign. To him, it is only a dreamer in the person of Alhaji Bature who can think up such a ridiculous story that he (Osafo) once described Mr. Woyome as his "Godfather, philanthropic extraordinaire and that if he had not met Woyome he did not know how his life would have been, at the launch of his presidential campaign in his hometown Akyem Awisa in Eastern Region". The former MP admitted that though quite a lot of people financed his presidential campaign, Alfred Woyome was certainly not part of his financiers or contributors. �� I knew what I was getting myself into so I was really prepared when I vied for the flagbearership�(For Bature) to spew out lies like this is bad�I honestly think Alhaji Bature is dreaming...I don�t think he will be saying things like this if he wasn�t dreaming. I launched my campaign and quite a number of people turned up and Woyome was not even present. I don�t recall seeing him�He (Woyome) never contributed to the campaign and I have never regarded him or described him as my godfather�,� Yaw Osafo-Maafo stated.
