Liberia Refugees Returning Home Friday

After staying in Ghana for close to 22 years, the first batch of Liberian refugees is heading home on Friday. The first flight leaves tomorrow and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees will take charge of the first 45. The same number of refugees will leave Ghana on Sunday, February 26 till they are all airlifted back to their native country. The repatriation exercise is in line with the UNHCRs rule that all Liberian refugees including those in Ghana will cease to be refugees by June 30. During a visit to the camp on Thursday, February 23, officials of the UNHCR were busy counseling refugees there ahead of their departure. While others said they wanted to stay, some refugees on grounds of anonymity told Citi News they were more than happy to return home after staying in Ghana for 22 years. One of them who identified himself as Martin said he would not go back home because he has two Ghanaian children.
