Akwetey, Sakara Contest CPP Flagbearer Slot

The Convention People�s Party (CPP) will go to congress in March to elect its flagbearer for the December general elections. Two applicants filed for the top position by close of nomination, according to General Secretary Ivor Greenstreet. The party�s 2008 running mate, Dr. Abu Sakara and a lawyer Mr. Bright Akwetey are the two contenders. Mr. Greenstreet told Citi News plans were far advanced to hold a successful congress. �We took a decision to open nominations for the presidential primary at the beginning of January and we decided to close nominations six weeks later which we have done,� he stated. He said: �It was all the intention of the party to hold its congress in March and as at now only two people, Dr. Abu Sakara and Mr. Bright Akwetey have filed properly to contest for the position of the presidential candidate of the CPP.� Mr. Greenstreet said the party established a vetting committee to duly examine all the documents of the aspirants. On the issue of the parliamentary nominations, he stated that the exercise was ongoing and that the primaries will be conducted in three phases. He explained: �The parliamentary nominations were opened in November 30 and we are doing our parliamentary primaries in three phases. �Phase one allows those in constituencies and regions around the country who have number one filed to contest but more importantly number two completed the organization processes around every polling station in their constituencies.� citifmonline.com/Ghana
