Prisoners To Exercise Their Franchise In December

Baring any technical hitch, prisoners in the country will excise their franchise in the forthcoming Presidential and Parliamentary elections. Officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) and Ghana Prisons Service who confirmed this to the The Times newspaper said they have been holding discussions with other stakeholders on the modalities to effect the Supreme Court ruling that granted voting rights to prisoners in the country. In separate interviews in Accra with the Chief Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Prisons Service, Assistant Superintendent of Prisons (ASP) Courage Atsem and Mrs. Rebecca Adjalo and official of the Electoral Commission confirmed this to the 'Times'. Mrs. Adjalo said the Supreme Court ruling on March 23, 2010, has settled the dust of whether inmates should be allowed to vote or not. She noted that what is left is to expunge the section in the Constitutional Instrument (CI)-12 which talks about those who are eligible to vote and those who are not.
