Work On Volta University Near Completion

Work on the new University of Health and Allied Science in the Volta Region remained abuzz, two months into the year, both inside and outdoors, as construction crews pushed to complete the summer's scheduled construction details on time. Over 90 per cent of structures for the university here have been completed. They include the Vice and Pro-Vice Chancellors' bungalows, staff accommodation, lecture halls, science laboratories and students' hostels. The university site visited by this reporter revealed that work is almost completed for full academic work to begin this academic year. Sites visited by this reporter, which were all at advanced stages of completion, were the two structures to house the Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice Chancellor, a 200-capacity hostel, lecture room and administrative block complexes, a laboratory, accommodation for principal staff and lecturers. The University of Health and Allied Sciences is a research and practical- orientated health educational institution dedicated to community service. Its academic component includes the schools of Allied Health Sciences, Nursing and Midwifery, Public Health, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Medicine. The governing councils of the university and the new one in Brong Ahafo have been inaugurated, with a commitment to admit students for the 2012/2013 academic year. The governing councils are to see to the establishment and running of the universities. The UHAS governing council is chaired by Professor Kofi Anyidoho of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ghana, Legon with Ms Justice Agnes Dordzi, an Appeal Court judge; Dr. Sodzi Sordzi-Tetteh, a medical pratitioner; Dr. Yaw Adu-Gyamfi, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Danadams Pharmaceuticals; Togbe Tepre Hodo-IV, the paramount chief of Anfoega Traditional area, and professor Ernest Aryeetey, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Legon, as members. Already, parliament has passed legislative instrument (LIs) for the University of Health and Allied Sciences.
