Chief Imam Assists Nsawam Prison

The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has donated items including bags of rice, blankets, soft drinks, plastic chairs and copies of the Holy Quran to inmates of the Nsawam Medium Security Prison. Sheikh Sharubutu also commissioned a borehole, built by Muslims from the American Community radio station based in New York, which will help solve the water problem at the prison. The donation, which formed part of the celebration of the Birth of the Holy Prophet Mohammed, was organized by Vibe FM in partnership with members of the Muslim community. Donating the items to the management of the prison, Sheikh Sharubutu advised the inmates to repent and lead exemplary lives. The Deputy Director General of Prisons, Ackom Kwame Gyedu, who received the items on behalf of the inmates, thanked the Chief Imam and pledged to fully utilize the items to benefit the inmates. He said the prison is currently being reformed from a warehouse to a reform center where prisoners are being taken through courses such as Information Technology (IT) and tuition for some to partake in external exams like the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). He said the prison was expanding its facilities to cater for the needs of the inmates. The Nsawam Prison Muslim Community pleaded with the Chief Imam to seek audience with the president to grant General Remission of Sentence across board to all inmates. We strongly believe most of us have genuinely reformed and repented, as a result we pray that our humble plea will be given the necessary consideration, they said.
