Seasoned journalist, Kwesi Pratt has castigated Vice President and NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia over his promises to the business community in Ghana.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has promised to implement a flat tax and tax amnesty system to provide reprieve to business owners if elected President.
The Vice President, at a meeting with the Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry members, described the current tax regime as burdensome and condemned the harassment that some Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) staff subject business owners to.
“They are harassing businesses. That harassment is coming from the sort of targets that are created at their office. They are setting unrealistic targets. And this is because the tax base is so narrow, you say to them, 'this is your target for this month', and they are trying to figure out where do I go.”
“Then for them, it is very easy, you go back to where you had it the last time. You go to taxpayers, the people who are already paying taxes and then you have to come up with a new reason why they should pay more and so you come up with all sorts of stuff," he said.
But the GRA staff are not pleased with Dr. Bawumia’s comments, as, to them, it undermine their hard work.
“We would like to state unequivocally that we, the workers of GRA, find this statement unfortunate and consider it as an attack on the efforts of the hardworking staff of the Authority, which, if not discontinued, would incur the displeasure of workers, disrupt revenue collection efforts, and breed industrial disharmony,” they said in a press release.
Tackling the issue during “Kokrokoo” morning show on Peace FM, Kwesi Pratt asked the Vice President what’s stopping him from implementing his tax reforms now.
He wondered why he wanted to wait to become president before he introduced policies aimed at alleviating the plight of business owners.
“Is he not the Vice President? You are in government, what are you doing now?” he queried.
He also noted that Dr. Bawumia, as leader of the Economic Management Team, sits in cabinet meetings, so he sought to find out if he tabled his recommendations, such as his resolve to cancel E-Levy, before them.
“If you can’t persuade your own colleagues to do what is right, there is a problem," Mr. Pratt argued.
He admonished Dr. Bawumia to “cut down on the promises because you can do it now," stressing it’s becoming too many.

It is sad that After two NPP administrations, the Accra-Kumasi railway lines have not been rehabilitated. If the railway lines are rehabilitated and extended to Sunyani, Techiman, Kintampo, Tamale, Wa and Bolgatanga, the axle load on our roads will reduce because we will transfer freight and fuel via trains. Our roads will therefore last longer. Nigerians easily revived their railways and built ultra modern railway terminals with Chinese help.
Block headed Kwesi NDC Pratt. Bawumia is simply not the President now and cannot implement anything now.
The bedrock of any thriving democracy is anchored on fairness and application of law without fear or favour. Seriously recent happenings in courts calls for sobber reflection How on earth a case filed on the 5th March 2024 as against a case filed 2 weeks later and the latter has been called without recourse to fixing even hearing date for the former. God is in control. Tit for tat, can Supreme compel Speaker to reconvene Parliament? Certainly not. In the spirit of fairness, Honourable Speaker should play the hard Ball and delay recalling of parliament until June 2024 or until Richard Sky case is dealt with. Without this hardline stand, Executive and Judiciary will not take Parliament and democracy serious.
KWASI IS A TYPICAL NDC PRO/ PROGAGANDIST WHO TAKES INSTUCTIONS FROM NDC/SAMMY GYAMFI
Kwasi Pratt, you are a hypocrite, when Attah Mills died, John Mahama issued a what he called critical policy statement, which showed the direction he wanted to take the state, you didn't ask him why he didn't implement those policies while he was vice president to Attah Mills, you joined him and looted this country, today you have found your voice to be asking ***barred word*** questions.
@Vincent Antwi-Adjei, I think you're the one being mischievous here. Your analogy doesn't support the argument you're trying to make. The president was elected on a ticket together with the vice president, he might have even won it because of the message the vice president was propagating. Today, the NPP knows that the choice of a running mate is akin to the so called breaking the 8 that they want, yet in the future, when things don't go in their favour, they will be making such unfounded arguments that the VP is "just" a mate who doesn't have any authority in the government. Really? Then what's is his business being there? Is he deliberately causing financial loss to the state? Has he influenced the government positively in any way? Is he truly behind some successes of the government as you people want us to believe? If that's true, it means he has no barriers in adding up his initiatives that he believes will help this nation, so why is he waiting on these policies he is talking about? In any case, both him and the president assured us that with him in charge of the economy, they would be bringing a paradigm shift to this country. We're they just lying to us? If so, then he's also lying to us today, he'll have no shame in departing from his promises if we mistakenly vote for him
Sometimes I wonder why someone who has obtained seasoned journalist title deliberately make politics affect his sense of reasoning and argument. Even your day born kid knows that this your question is irrelevant and mischief. Bawumia is a vice and supporting the president but he has no powers to implement major policy like tax amnesty without the overall president sanctioning it. Is like you want to suggest that Bawumia should disrespect his Boss and start implement his own decisions without endorsement from his Boss. Masa stop disgracing yourself and let your long term of journalism be meaningful
It is just mind boggling. It's even more unimaginative how the NPP and Bawumia think they can deceive the majority of Ghanaians with these lame tactics. Time will tell....
