The Ministry of Gender and Social Protection has waded into the ‘controversial’ jailed term of a mother of nine who is serving 11 years in prison for selling alcohol mixed with Indian hemp to the public.
Jailbird Ama Forson was sentenced by an Accra Circuit Court last week after she was charged with unlawful custody of narcotic drugs.
Her sentenced has been questioned by many including Human Right activists – some described her jailed term as ‘pathetic’.
However, Gender Minister, Nana Oye Lithur in a statement on Monday said her outfit is mediating with the Attorney General’s Department to assess the circumstances of the case and provide support including legal services.
“Our Social Service officers will also visit the children to assess their welfare and provide support,” Nana Oye posted on Facebook.
