The Ghana Police Service has said an internal memo directing all personnel of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) to stop checking drivers’ licences and road worthy certificates “until further notice”, was leaked to the public.
A wireless message which was signed by Commissioner of Police Ransford Moses Ninson Tuesday said “all motor checks in the country [are to be] suspended with immediate effect.”
It said personnel of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service are to be "used only for traffic management duties only”, while personnel of the Highway Patrol Unit are only to check for arms and drugs.
Per the order, police will not check documentation, road worthiness, and allied requirements of motorists.
Superintendent Cephas Arthur, Director of Public Affairs of the Police Service, told Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peacefm's Kokrokoo Wednesday that the memo was "leaked".
Asked how a state organ tasked with ensuring the protection and safety of Ghanaians be breached and an internal formal directive leaked, he replied; "The leaking of these internal memos is a conundrum that we are all fighting.
“Perhaps it is something that we have to live with. … All it takes is for one miscreant police officer…to take a shot of an internal memo and send it [out]. It is something that is very untoward. In the police administration, we’re deploying our rules and regulations to check it but we may never be able to totally uproot it. We have to manage it,” he said.
Justifying the decision to halt motor checks across the country despite criticisms that it is unsound, the Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service explained that the unrelenting traffic jam on Ghana’s roads needs attention, hence the directive to shift focus away from other operations of the police.
“All attention is going to be concentrated on managing traffic which has become a source of concern in our communities just to make sure that we create a more congenial atmosphere for travelers and commuters in our cities and our towns,” he stated.
It is not clear when and if the directive will be withdrawn.

Until now, all of us Ghanaians were crying out loud to get the police out of our urban roads and trunk highways...now we're accusing government of prequel interference....HYPOCRYTICAL Ghanaians!!!!!
This is something I personally don't understand meaning any body can drive unworthy car on our roads, politics is making honourable institution laughing stock,
sign of desperation, anxiety and dexterity , loss of sence of judgment, fear of losing power, to sum it all sign of incompetence. you are withdrawing police from checking necessary document on the car and installing Nursing trainee allowance at this crusial hour. last week it was the "azar or awam" posting of trained teachers a month ago it was the same "azar or awam"posting of nursing trainees. no wonder you said Ghanaians have short memories.
It is sad that everything in this country is done with political calculation as the underlying motive. How do we get their votes is the main concern of our governments. This is a pity. Can you imagine how many unlicensed drivers will flood our roads? After all no one cares. Politics! politics!! politics!!!
Even just a single internal memo, the Ghana Police could not keep it secured. How much more the internal security of the whole country? JOKING PPL
Please google search- Duties of MTTU and Road traffic ACT 2004. The directive is right. The Police is only been lazy by standing at one location every time to extort money from drivers. its a step in right direction but it can be done occasionally or randomly. please read ACT 2004 of road traffic act or search for responsibilities or duties of MTTU. those criticizing including IMANI Ghana has goofed big time. At least the extortion of money by Police would decrease. BIG PLUS TO IGP
See his nose..like the fante kenkey I stepped on..
Really its interesting directive and equally interesting explanation. So now cars without proper document can ply our roads. For God sake there is no traffic jam in my town so how can the police administration make such a blanket statement. Well at least my friends taxi and trotro drivers will have a field day. But I hope this is not in connection with the election since drivers have been complaining of attitude of policemen . Hmmm as3m seb3
May every evil plot of any individual or group of people against our nation Ghana be exposed in the name of Jesus Christ
This should sense you right that you are a state institution and for that matter all manner of people from different tribes, political affiliations, religion etc.can be found in the institution. So if you the key leaders choose to denigrate your stature by coming out with such unprofessional and illogical decisions and actions that will favor the ruling party, your bad deeds shall be exposed one-by-one. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES.
