Ghana’s main opposition leader Nana Akufo-Addo has congratulated president-elect of The Gambia, Adama Barrow.
The property developer beat incumbent Yahya Jammeh who has ruled the small country for 22 years by 50,000 votes in Thursday’s polls.
Mr Akufo-Addo, who is also seeking to unseat President John Mahama in the December 7 polls in Ghana said in a statement that: “This is to extend my warmest congratulations to the United Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Adama Barrow, on his hard-fought victory in the Gambian presidential election of December 1, 2016.”
“Through the peaceful exercise of their sovereign and democratic right to elect their own leaders, the people of Gambia have opened a new chapter in their history, and have moved to strengthen the frontiers of their democracy.
“This is the first time, in 22 years that a sitting President has been rejected at the polls. It has reinforced the democratic notion that the people have the power to change governments through peaceful means.
“President Yahaya Jammeh is to be commended for graciously conceding defeat, thereby laying to rest any lingering suspicion and anxiety about the fate of Gambia in the aftermath of the elections.
“It is my hope and expectation that the President-Elect’s tenure in office will be marked by the delivery of progress and prosperity to the Gambian people in conditions of freedom and the rule of law.
“Warm congratulations once again to Adama Barrow, and best wishes for his success as he prepares to take up the responsibilities and challenges of the high office of President of the Republic of Gambia,” Mr Akufo-Addo added.

Akufo Addo, is always quick to congratulate other country's president but has never congratulated any president in his own country before. William Akufo Addo, why ?
You will congratulate Mahama in 4 days time for winning the election in Ghana. Get ready to be buried.
GOD WILLINGLY, GHANA IS FOLLOWING THE GAMBIA GOOD EXAMPLE.NANA IS COMING.
Concert man Akuffo Addo. Predictable opportunist
The people of Gambia have rightly shown the way to reject corrupt incompetent despots who think they own the countries they rule. Ghana lets follow suit ....change is coming!!!!!
Make sure to congratulate John Mahama on the 9th of December and you should come out fast as you did.
Thank you nana for your excellent delivery all the time Re:Adwoa and Hmm..wait and see how your ***barred word*** will be uprooted like cassava. The people of Ghana will prefer an old man with wisdom who can deliver success to a so called 'young' corrupt and serial bribe taker and giver..I mean John-ford. nana beba. nana no size
You are the man to take Ghana out from its current predicament and set her on a rock to stay. Let the dreamers dream... they will soon wake up and see life in REAL.
You think that will happen in Ghana. I listen to you yesterday on peacefm and clearly you don't seem strong enough to take up presidential duties. There is a time in everyone's life to call it quit. But sincerely, either you deliberately want to continue pursing your presidential ambition knowing very well that you are not fit for the job or curtail the good progress that Mahama is making. After listening to you yesterday, I find it difficult to come to terms with some of your utterances because you think Ghana is your property and Mahama has taken it from you so its time to take it back. Mr. you are just not fit for the highest office of our land. I will be very surprise if the people of Ghana vote you as president of our country.
hahhaha make sure you come out fast to congratulate MAHAMA as soon as he wins. we dont wont any court case again
