Paul Adom-Otchere, Host of Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana show says he sees nothing wrong with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology’s (KNUST) decision in denying best WASSCE student admission to Medical school and rather commends the University for doing the right thing because the 19year old student failed his oral examination.
According to him, Ghanaians are overly criticising KNUST on this issue because universities all over the world conduct tests and interviews on students before admitting them into their institution. So if students fail to meet the selection criteria with or without a good grade, the university has the right to deny students admission to the programme they chose to offer.
He advised that our curricula be revised and support universities when they test students in other aspects by trying to present rounded students who come out to solve problems because they have potential knowledge in everything.
“Part of the reason of our 60 year old history with no problem solving situation is that our curricula has presented us and made us academic thinkers and we think only through the spectacles of academics. We don’t think about problem solving, we don’t think about changing the world, we don’t think about achieving outside the academic world and that has been a problem of this society”, he stated.
He urged Ghanaians to understand the processes universities take in admitting medical students because it has about three processes which one is the academic qualification Pius Kyere passed, the other is the examination stage and the last is the oral interview stage.
According to him, all candidates must pass through this stage because they school wants to produce doctors who are not only good in academics but also have general knowledge in everything.
Pius Kyere, who graduated from St James Seminary and Secondary School in the Brong Ahafo Region, scored straight As in all eight subjects, including his electives – Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics and emerged as the best student in the WASSCE examination.
Pius was shortlisted for an interview process for admission into the Medical School, but it seems he could not pass the oral examination.
Pius is currently reading his second choice programme, Doctor of Optometry, at the KNUST.

Paul, even though I agree with you that the KNUST has done nothing wrong with the criteria used, I am very disappointed in you saying St. James Seminary is not an elite school and Berekum is a village. Do you really know the meaning of the word ELITE? I thought you said to be a good doctor you should have potential knowledge of everything but I am surprise you don't know to be a good journalist, you should have potential knowledge of everything. Do you really do research before coming on air? I am disappointed in you and Metro TV. I used to watch your programs. In fact, I respected you so much but now I don't think I do. I am surprise you don't know St. James Seminary is the best Secondary school in Ghana today. Go back and do your research well whether you will not find the following about St. James Seminary: 1. Since the year 2003 when SSSCE/WASSCE ranking started, St. James Seminary has always been among the best ten SSS/SHS in Ghana. 2. St. James Seminary won the Ghana @50 National Debate Competition. St. James has also been in the finals at the national level on a number of occasions. 3. Since the year 2011, St. James Seminary remains the only SHS in Ghana that has been consistent in her excellent performance in the WASSCE examination. 4. The best student in this year's WASSCE examination in West Africa came from St. James (This is the only good thing you claim to know about the school). The third best student in Ghana also came from St. James Seminary. So Paul, what are you telling us. I am surprise you don't know all these things about St. James Seminary and you call yourself a professional journalist. A journalist of your calibre should have known better. I thought journalists are supposed to be current. If you were a good journalist and for that matter current, you should have known all the facts about St. James Seminary I have given you by now. You really have to work on your communication skills. You think Ghana is only Accra and therefore if you don't live or school in Accra, then you are a villager. Do you know Berekum very well? Do you know why Berekum is called "Burgers town"? Go and review your literature well and see your ignorance and incompetence. I think you should be thinking of apologizing to authorities of St. James Seminary, her students, her great old students and the good people of the Brong-Ahafo Region for describing the Brong-Ahafo Regional Capital (Sunyani) as a village. OK, Paul, even if St. James is a non elite school, who told you students from less endowed schools cannot become medical doctors? Are you telling us KNUST denied Pius admission into the medical school because he came from a non elite school? To the best of my knowledge KNUST doesn't do that. He was denied admission based on his performance at the interview and not because he attended a village school. Paul, next time you want to speak, think about your choice of words. I am really disappointed in you and I don't think I can ever watch any of your programs again. I will pause for now...............But I will be back
It is never true anyone is denied reading medicine coz he or she has no godfather or doctor in his or her family. let's be realistic here pls, I'm current times 8As is very common hence in case a std fail the orals, he will be beaten by other competing stds who do well at d orals.
please allow Paul. I think he is just exercising his freedom of speech without thinking properly. He has a spiral mind and can not digest issues properly
Paul, what are you talking about? What was the question that he couldn't answer. Our Universities are just not interested in recruiting the best brains and nurturing them. He could be an exceptional child. If you ask him a question about Alex Ferguson formerly of Manchester United and he couldn't answer is that enough basis? we are joking. I wish he declines any other offer from the University. I will facilitate a trip outside for him to go and develop his talent
.... i hear they the interviews panels for our medical school say if you dont have a higher up, godfather or no doctor in your family they will not pass you. they will always fail you.
