Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has called on Africans as they commemorate the African Union day to come together as a common force to ‘fight’ to shape Africa’s future like “our forebears envisaged”.
Today, Ghana joins other African countries to celebrate the African Union Day, the annual commemoration of the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) (now known as the African Union) on May 25, 1963. It is celebrated in various countries on the African continent, as well as around the world.
John Dramani Mahama in a post-Facebook to commemorate the day, noted that the journey towards freedom in Africa has been very daunting but however, the spirit of Pan-Africanism has been unquenchable.
In surging forward as a continent, he underscored the need for Africans to build a united front to collaborate devoid of barriers, stereotypes, and relics of neocolonialism to help build a better Africa where generations could be proud of.
He said: “Let’s keep working at it, let’s tear down the barriers, let’s tear down stereotypes, let’s tear down the relics of Neocolonialism and let’s work hard to shape our common future as our forebears envisaged”.
This year’s celebration is the 54th edition.
