Contrary to the perception that Africa is deprived and underdeveloped, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has stated that the continent “is not poor but a wealthy continent”.
He said “economic growth has taken root in recent years” but African governments are failing to convert the growth into opportunities for their people.
The Chairman of the Africa Progress Panel made these remarks in a video recording to mark the closing ceremony of the 52nd Annual Meeting of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) Board of Governors.
He emphasised that the continent needs an economic transformation that harnesses growth for many rather than the benefit of few.
He indicated that most of Africa’s challenges persist “not because of a lack of knowledge, plans or technical solutions but a lack of political will”.
For him, a new sense of urgency is needed among African leaders to implement the long discussed transformation of the continent.
He was of the view that civil society and the private sector need to challenge leaders to live up to Africa’s potential with the private sector playing a leading role in Africa’s transformation.
He added that the transformation can only be achieved if governments implement the right regulatory framework and an enabling environment.

From Australia.
You are right, sir. Also, the financial sector needs to be revamped to decrease the interest rates charged on loans etc.
Corruption in African can never stop until the continent understand the full use of computer automation and dumsor becomes a thing of the past. African government frown on technology and energy source of power. Reason being that a constant source of power (electricity) and computerization of the government sector will deprive them of stealing money. The current system depends massively on pen and paper hence it makes it easy to steal money and hide it abroad for Westerners to use it to develop their economies. Africans like to show off to their friends and families at churches and social gathering hence their quest to steal money at all cost to support their evil deeds. Politician give lip service in fighting corruption because they are all the same. NPP and NDC have robbed Ghana to the extent that Ghana has become a veteran cry baby. Most people in Ghana are corrupt including civil servants, managers, the clergy and politicians. There is no way out. It is full time colonialism and exploitation against the black man by a fellow black men. Any one wondering why Africans are dreading the rough seas to get to Italy?
well said my hero, the civil society and the private sector the only hope left for long awaiting african transformation I also second that Africa is never poor we are rich if we can stop our greedy public officials from dipping their hands in our coffers.
