Former Central Regional Minister Kweku Ricketts-Hagan has charged government to ban all forms of small-scale mining for at least 10 years.
He was of the view that illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, is thriving in the country due to the issuance of small-scale licences. Even though small-scale mining is legal and reserved for Ghanaians, he observed that galamsey had become an offshoot of small-scale mining.
For him, it was time government placed an ultimatum for at least a decade when the lands and water bodies destroyed by galamsey would have recovered and a more comprehensive solution implemented to prevent further harm to the environment.
“This small-scale mining, is it something that we should encourage in the first place? ...Could we bring an end to this thing for some number of years?…Let’s do a ban for about 10 years,” he told Umaru Sandah, host of Citi FM’s The Big Issue, on Saturday, May 27.
He was of the view than a plan should be drafted to integrate individuals involved in the practice into other jobs.

So far as I don't agree with the ndc and wished they never come back to power to ste*l and destroy,I agree with Ricketts -Hagan,he didn't condemn it only but gave solution that is a good son of our country,he might be at the wrong side but probably for a reason. Who is Ricketts - Hagan to advise ndc government the fact that he was in the government didn't mean he had a say. Ndc know their own and those they listen to and those they use. If Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur the Vice President if the republic had no say how much more a regional minister? PK was just a Vice President by name but Stan Dogbe,Ibrahim Mahama and Lordina were doing his work. They did the same to Prof. Mills when he was the President,Koku Anyidoho was firing people on air like he was the president the good people of Ghana elected. Ndc is a kriminal organisation,a mafia gang and if you are not part of the Gambino family forget it. Our people in the Central region are being used by these people for their selfish interest and they see them as the mild Akans they can use and rely on at anytime and were shocked when they got only 5 parliamentary seats. Our eyes are open now! It is better and worth it for the vulture in your hometown to consume your flesh for at least some flesh and bones would be left than a stranger taking you away.We are Akans and no matter what which region we all feel the same.
kwashhhia, why didnt you ban it when you were in charge? Modda fockkka
Why did NDC govt looked on whiles minerals commission continue to give out galamsey licences all these years? NDC is only good at providing solutions to problems when they are out of power. They become confused and corrupt when they get to power. They are now seeing the damage of galamsey to the environment when they are out of power..... It is hypocrisy and mischievous on the part of NDC as a party.
