Lance Corporal Frederick Amanor, the Police Officer captured on video beating a client of Midland Savings and Loans Company is expected to be arraigned today [Monday].
Frederick Amanor was arrested on Friday after the video of the police brutality went viral on social media.
The incident sparked public outrage and drew condemnation from Amnesty International, Ghana Bar Association, the Ministry for Gender Children and Social Protection and a number of civil society organizations. The woman, Patience Osafo, was reportedly trying to withdraw money after office hours due to frustrations from the bank.
She was assaulted by a police officer for refusing to leave the banking hall of Midland Savings and Loans with her grandchild.
Patience Osafo subsequently lodged a formal complaint at the Legon Police Station after she was led to do so due to the huge public interest in the case.
A statement from the police on the matter said that all applicable charges will be preferred against the officer.
Already, Frederick Amanor has been interdicted and his uniform and all other police accoutrements taken from him, pending internal disciplinary proceedings.
In addition, an investigation has commenced into the conduct of officials of the Midland Savings and Loans limited.
President Nana Akufo-Addo has said he supports fully any sanction the Police administration will take against Frederick Amanor to serve as a deterrent to other officers.
“The measures that the IGP has taken to sanction the erring policeman and to make sure these don’t happen again, have my complete support. I support 100 percent the measures he has taken so that we can stop these incidents from proliferating.”
Calls for transparency
Amnesty International Ghana has threatened to protest along with other Civil Society Organizations if the Ghana Police Service does not make its report on investigations into recent incidents of police brutality public.
Amnesty International’s list of incidents includes the battery of Patience Osafo and the killing of seven men believed to be armed robbers in Ashanti Region last week.
The Country Director of Amnesty International, Robert Akoto Amoako, said “if we don’t get the report after the investigations on the reported issues, it will appear the police have some impunity issues…. This time, all CSOs are going to come together and we are going to go on the streets if they don’t do something about this and bring out the report.”

He in not a member of the invincible forces so he will be sacrificed. As much as I don't condone what he did, i dare say say that his offense is not as chasing a Judge (who also happens to be a woman) out of court or actual beating up of a uniformed police officer at the seat of government. What action did occupy Ghana , the Ghana Bar Association and the like take? ***barred word*** farm country. shiaaaa!
I MUST SAY THE POLICEMAN DID NOT DO WELL AT ALL FOR BEATING UP THE LADY IN THAT MANNER BUT AM NOT IN SUPPORT OF THE HARSH TREATMENT METED OUT TO HIM. AM SURE THERE MIGHT BE A PROVOCATION AND HE MIGHT BE INTRUCTED BY PESONEL OF THE BANK TO GRAG HER OUT. HE MIGHT ACT BY INSTRUCTION. THIS IS A YOUNG OFFICER WHO HAS BEEN TRAINED BY THE TAX PAYER HE HAS GONE THROUGH TOUGH TRAINING AND HE HAS KNOWN HOW TO USE A GUN. IF YOU SACK HIM TO GO AND STAY HOME WITHOUT A JOB AND HE BECOMES BITTER AND HUNGRY YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW WHAT HE CAN DO? HE CAN BE SENT TO A REMOTE AREA OR HIS SALARY SUSPENDED FOR MONTHS TO COMPENSATE THE LADY. THEY WAY WE JUST SACK UNIFORM PERSONEL AND PLACE THEM IN CIVIL SOCIETY IS NOT THE BEST. THANK GOD THE LADY HAS HER LIFE THE PUBLIC HAS SHOWN MUCH LOVE AND KINDNESS TO HER AND THIS POLICEMAN HAS REGRETED HIS ACTION BY NOW. NOONE HAS APPROACHED HIM TO ASK HIS SIDE OF THE STORY BUT AM AMASED HIS OWN POLICE ADMINISTRATION ARE TREATING HIM AS A COMMON CRIMINAL. THE PRESIDENT DID NOT HELP MATTERS HE SHOULD NOT HAVE COME IN AT ALL HE COULD SPEAK TO THE IGP IN THE QUIET MORE PARTICULARLY SINCE HE HAS BEEN VERY QUIET IN THE KILLING OF THE 7 YOUNG MEN IN THE ASANTE REGION WHY WAS HE IN THE RUSH TO NAIL THIS POOR POLICE OFFICER. I DONT THINK BEATING A WOMAN WHO IS BEING COMPENSATED HAS MORE GRAVITY THAN SHOOTING 7 STRONG MEN. THE POLICE MAN DID NOT DO WELL AT ALL BUT HE MUST BE GIVEN A SECOND CHANCE THAN TO BE SACKED ON THE STREETS AFTER ALL THIS TRAINING THATS MY WORRY. DEMOTE HIM OR POST HIM SOMEWHERE IN A REMOTE AREA OR CEACE HIS SALARY. PUNISH HIM DONT SACK HIM.
