The Catholic Bishop of Wiawso Diocese, Bishop Joseph Francis Kweku Essien has described the current situation Ghana as a country and its citizens are facing as a state of “captivity in our own land”.
In a video cited by Mynews, the Catholic Bishop in pain chided leaders of the country including chiefs letting them know that they have failed to protect the interest of the people in the country.
According to observation the Catholic Bishop has made, Ghanaians have become “slaves” in their own land while in “captive” as well.
Bishop Francis Kweku Essien argued that, citizens of Ghana should have gotten a better living looking at the mineral deposits in the country but because of mismanagement on the part of its leaders, citizens are now suffering.
“We are in captivity in the sense that, a country like ours, a country which mines gold, diamond, manganese, bauxite, a country which has timber, which produces cocoa in abundance. And we have a country which is also now having oil in commercial quantity. But go to our hospitals, or many of our hospitals, if not all of them, and see what is happening there. Pregnant women lying down, lying down. Are we not in captivity, are we not in exile. He retorted.
However, in the case of health, most health facilities in the country have currently been hit with no “bed syndrome” where most patients are unable to access health care service because there are no or few beds available in our hospitals.
In his video at a sermon, the man of God chastised leaders for failing the citizenry in developing the country Ghana.
He further called on opinion leaders, politicians, traditional rulers to seek for the betterment of the citizens first.
Bishop Kweku Essien who seems to have broad knowledge, in his video sighted a small town in the Western Region of the country describing it as a place “infested with Chinese”.
“There is a place called Wassa Akropong. The town at the moment has gotten a new name known as Wassa China. How did Wassa Akropong get that name?
He attributed his argument to the fact that, Chinese nationals have taken over the small town in almost all business activities supposed to be reserved for the indigenous people.
“The place is infested with Chinese. Chinese are now roasting plantain and selling sugar cane. These Chinese are using our people”, he added. Addressing leaders of the area on the issue, Bishop Essien chided leaders asking whether we are not aware.. “There are assemblymen and MPs. . There are chiefs and they see it. It is like nobody can talk about it. For what gain we are getting only God knows. So we are slaves in our own land”. He stressed.

I disagree with the one who criticised @Intergrity. The moment you start to accused someone of racism, supremacist and so on, it shows that you've lost the argument and seeking shelter under shaming tactics. The Bishop and Intergrity are lamenting on the corrupt system which aids foreigners to ursurp our rules and let in foreigners to come in to compete unfairly with the indegenous population. For your information this is the very thing that brought to power Trump. This forced Angela Merkel to go into coalition with a right wing party. That led to 52% of British people voting for Brexit. I can go on and on. We have been indoctrinated with social science lecturers and self serving social scientists telling us that the nation state is not important but should look at the global world. Thank you. Anything other than this is xenophobic, racist, bigotry and so on. This idea has made people poorer. The examples are there to be seen. It has just made people like Obama, George Soros, Angela Merkel, Baroso, Jean-Claude Juncker and the rest rich and famous. We used to blame Capitalists so replaced them with the above named characters so corrupt to the bone. They pretend that they are with the ordinary man but it is all lies. Intergrity seems to just be saying looking global just enriches a few at the top. Following rules is essential in our communities I wholly agree with you. This is a totally different issue.
The Catholic Priest has raised some issues but unfortunately he has blown it out of proportion. Don't forget that Ghanaian population in diaspora is very huge and even some are living in China now. If the Chinese are living there legally and working so hard to cater for themselves and their families so be it. This is a wake up call for Ghanaians to work hard and to catch up with the modern trend of the 21st century. Some Ghanaian citizens could sit at their comfort zone playing oware, dame, cards, ludo, palm wine drinking spot without taken good care of their time or their business. Therefore, African time to work or to functions needs to be changed to punctuality. What's more? Africans must be creative and innovative. it is my prayer that one day Africa will arise and shine.
Our leaders are ***barred word*** and ***barred word***,they sign contracts looking at their selfish gains .Look at the cost of government schools, hospitals and roads.stealing stealing stealing all the way.
@Ojam Thank you for your comment!
What is happening in Wassa Akropong is pathetic to say the least. nobody can go to China and take over any town like that. i do not think those criticizing the good Bishop have even pass through the town lately.
Your response is typical of most Africans and Ghanaians for that matter. Whenever you are found wanting you always claim that you have been misunderstood as if the rest of the world do not understand the English language. For your information I live in my own country therefore I am not worried about my residency status thank you very much. I have observed how Ghanaians and other Africans in my country constantly moan about how they are treated in my country and yet here we are, a so called priest spewing out the same racist sentiments/arguments that white supremacists churn out. You talk about obeying rules and yet you people constantly break rules in your own country as well as mine yet somehow you hypocritically think that is fine. Sort out the mess in your socio-economic system before pointing fingers at foreigners in your country. This is how Hitler started blaming Jews for the wrongs of German society and we all know what happened after that.
This 3rd. writer must be living outside of Ghana and has concerns about losing his/her residency. I think the Bishop has been misunderstood - he is not advocating kicking out any foreigner be they Chinese or otherwise. He is worried about the loss of our heritage and identity. No country in the developed world will give up its heritage, resources, etc. just for the sake of fairness to other people. They let you in, allow you to study, work, own property, etc. but there are rules to respect and follow - our governments in Africa, and for that matter, Ghana are not doing that, they are allowing foreigners to take over the running of our country, often, to satisfy their own interests, and that is wrong - like it or not.
BISHOP IS RIGHT. THERE IS EVERYTHING THE CHINESE TAKING OVER OUR ECONONMIES. IT SHOULD BE RESISTED WITH ALL OUR MIGHT.
There are so many loud mouths in Ghana who constantly complain yet they never ever provide any solutions to the problems that they are complaining about. What is wrong with Chinese integrating into Ghanaian society and willing to work hard to make a living? Is he proposing that all Ghanaians running businesses in other countries should be prevented and sent home? You complain about racism when you are in other countries so what is the difference between what he is preaching and racist comments made by white supremacists? I thought your Bible teaches you that all people of the world are God's children or are you preaching from a different Bible?
WELL DONE Bishop Essien - But just wait until the Atewa Forest Reserve is destroyed in favor of bauxite production - foreigners and the Chinese will not only take over our country, they will be exporting drinking water to us.
