DAILY GUIDE has gathered that the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) office in the Upper East Region was yet to register a “luxury vehicle” at the time of filing this report on August 2, 2018.
Even though leadership of the DVLA in the region did not comment on the issue, a DAILY GUIDE source said from the beginning of the month of August, owners of “luxury vehicles” who came to the office to register their vehicles rescinded their decision to go through the registration process upon hearing the amount they were supposed to pay as “Luxury Vehicle Tax”.
The implementation of the “Luxury Vehicle Tax” by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) through the DVLA took effect from Wednesday August 1, 2018.
Per this arrangement between the GRA and the DVLA, owners of vehicles with engine capacity from 2950 cubic centimetres upwards are required to pay taxes that correspond with the capacity of their engines.
Apart from vehicle owners doing new registrations, owners of vehicles that have been registered already will pay the new “Luxury Vehicle Tax” anytime they go for the renewal of their road worthy certificate.
Vehicles such as ambulances and commercial vehicles that transport more than 10 passengers, as well as tractors and any other vehicle that may be added to the exemption list by a sitting minister of finance, have been exempted from paying the “Luxury Vehicle Tax” even if their engine capacity is 2950 cubic centimetres or more.
Meanwhile, there was a brief operation on Thursday, August 2, by a joint security service taskforce at some selected points in the Bolgatanga Municipality to inspect vehicle documents.
