An attempt by former members of the Unit Committee of Fufuo, a community in the Atwima Nwabiagya District in the Ashanti Region, to avert a calamity by demolishing a weak school building turned tragic when the building collapsed on them last Monday.
Equipped with axes, the members tried to pull down the dilapidated mud structure which they thought posed a danger to the community, particularly the schoolchildren.
However, disaster struck when the building collapsed on them, leading to the death of one of them, Owusu Bempah.
A member of the committee, Amos Anane, told the Daily Graphic that the incident happened around 8:30 a.m.
He said he did not know how it happened, noting that “all we realised was the building collapsing on us”.
He said Bempah and one other person who got hurt were rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), where Bempah was pronounced dead on arrival.
A source close to the police confirmed the incident and said investigations were going on to ascertain the cause of the collapse of the building.
Forty-two-year-old Bempah was a father of five.
His wife is currently five-month pregnant with their sixth child.
