Ghana’s High Commissioner to Canada, Ayikoi Otoo has appealed to Ghanaians in the diaspora to use their acquired knowledge and resources to assist in nation building back home.
He made the appeal when he addressed the Council of Ewe Association of North America (CEANA) Conference in Toronto, Canada.
According to the former Attorney General, government seeks to reverse the trend of brain drain by tapping into the knowledge base of Ghanaians studying abroad.
He also encouraged Ghanaians living abroad to keep supporting developmental agenda back home by sending remittances for projects.
He said: “Government has great interest in the diaspora and we look forward to the diaspora using the acquired knowledge, skills and resources to help build their respective countries and the realisation of brain gain and not brain drain.
“You must continue to support your country back home with your remittances. We as government are aware that school fees and medical expenses, housing, festivals, weddings and funerals all become realities through your generosities.
“You can assist your communities with health centers, the construction of schools, the provision of libraries, places of convenience, hospital beds and equipment, school buses for kids, construction of recreational centers, old people’s homes, sinking of wells, provision of improved seeds and fertilisers and irrigation projects among others. These in my view will improve the lives of all people [back home].”

Laudable idea but what have you done to uproot corruption. Supporting our beloved countries is not a problem. But the bottom line is how can one trust the system. Imagine you suffer your life and part some to support your country and somebody somewhere form nowhere just take the money and build / buy properties for him/her self and the family to the detriment of the poor and deprived meant to benefit from such commitment. Until those are punished or removed, I think it will be a very difficult and challenging to convince people to do that.
