The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) says it is illegal for tenants to remove and transfer meters from rented properties they are vacating to other locations.
Most tenants who have issues with their landlords remove electricity meters they facilitate to install when vacating.
Engineer Joseph Forson, Tema Regional General Manager of the ECG, interacting with the media, said the practice where tenants who facilitated the acquisition of meters on their rented premises claim ownership, was wrong and illegal.
Mr Forson explained that the meter was a state property and tenants had no right to remove it from their rented premises adding that in any case, ECG only had contracts with landlords not tenants.
He indicated that a landlord was supposed to endorse and provide some information when applying for a meter therefore their contract was with the landlord rather than the tenant.
He further said meters were not transferrable and urged the public to visit the nearest ECG offices to handle any meter related issues.
The General Manager reminded the public to only use Energy Commission’s certified electricians to wire their properties as it was a requirement for the application for a meter.
He indicated that ECG used to license internal and external electrical contractors but the Energy Commission was now required by law to license those engaged in internal wiring therefore no application would be approved without strict adherence to it.

***barred word***, why do u collect monies from us when we apply for a meter? In any case, these metres rather help the ECG to monitor their sales and it does not benefit the users. Hmm sometimes I feel mad when I think about this ECG people. Making so much money from Ghanaians
This is very fun, It is like you buy a car when you were living in a rented place at lapaz, then when moving to another rented place in Abeka junction you are ask not to take the car away with you.... hmmmm Master since we pay for it before it is our property now... Please check your poor services you guys are giving to us Ghanaian first......
Why ECG when your staff buy these metres in their names and other people's names and sell it to those who need it. Wait Ghanaians are not angry enough, a day will most definitely come, and we'll see. Be there and say whatever you like.
is it not illegal to sell meters to customers then? i bought my meter at my present apartment for GCH 600 from the old tenant who left before me. because when he applied for his personal meter he was asked to pay GHC600, so he also sold it to me same price. the same way, i paid for my meter for my house at my hometown too. in all, i paid ghc 1500 - the meter and the fixing. so what is ECG talking about here?
What makes it illegal after they sold the meter for you and paying for installation too? this is what happened exactly when I applied for ECG meter.
It is 100% illegal for any tenant to remove the meter. paying for the meter installation dont make you the owner. if any tenant is made to pay for the meter the amount paid should be deducted from the rent. remember paying for something dont make you the owner it the person whos name is on the receipt that is the owner.
Then why Tennant has to pay for it?
its state property.***barred word***. it is for free
