The lives of thousands of passengers who use the Adomi Bridge daily have been put in danger following the removal of bolts and nuts holding vital parts of the Bridge by some unscrupulous persons.
Report suggest that the suspects are targeting to remove some of the galvanized steel for a yet to be known purpose.
The DCE for Asuogyaman Samuel Kwame Agyekum confirmed the incident, adding that the security operatives are investigating the incident while the Ghana Highway Authority has been notified.
The Adomi Bridge located in Atimpoku in the Eastern Region which spans the Volta River that drains into the Gulf of Guinea, south of the Akosombo Dam was designed in 1956 and completed in 1957 by William Brown, of the engineers Freeman Fox & Partners.
In 2008, some serious cracks on the structure’s traverse beams were discovered. Following these findings, the Government of Ghana imposed a load limit on the bridge in an attempt to slow down the rate of damage. The cracked girders were locally strengthened by the installation of additional steel plates at the affected areas. The continued use of the bridge by overloaded trucks however, further compromised its safety and stability.
In 2009 , more cracks developed, mainly around the same area as the earlier ones were discovered; this necessitated major rehabilitation works on the suspension bridge.
In 2014, the bridge was closed to traffic on 10 March 2014 till 2016 for repair works and was opened to traffic in December 2015 after it had been refurbished.

May any one trying to remove a bolt or any part of the bridge fall down head-first with broken neck! What kind of greed is this? For their selfish interests they want to endanger the lives of innocent citizens! Why don't they electrically charge the bridge to kill these criminals? They are better dead than alive because they are a danger to the nation!
Please MR. DCE, quickly go find some money and replace the removed bolts and nuts to save lives. Don't wait till something drastic happens. There is no need to investigate.... once it has been established that the bolts and nuts are gone, you quickly replace and then you put mechanism in place to check and prevent the removal. Period. I guess this is house a responsible citizen and for that matter a DCE should do. Don't complain and call for an investigations that will not yield any results. If any lives and property are lost on this bridge, I bet we would hold you responsible.
Adomi has a Military and police guard because it is termed a national asset. So how did this happen? The Police and military guards should answer for this.
Very very sad news! What are they investigating after the ***barred word*** have gone, CCTV? Definitely not, we don't have. No. Now on a daily basis in all parts of Accra we see these people collecting scrap metal, even removing the grills from the cutters. Nobody challenges them and it is big business. Most of these people are not Ghanaians either. Once a gentleman confronted one of them on the high street, near the Ghana Commercial Bank and the guy threatened the gentleman asking if he the gentleman wanted to die. Thankfully the gentleman faced him and dared him to remove the grill which scared the scrap dealer and he went off. We know this is going on. Yes people in the security agencies are regularly paid to work. Are they? I am sure if the salary delays they will go to the media with threats. Even though citizens can challenge them the security are paid to ensure such criminal activities do not thrive. We see truckloads of scrap on the way to Tema on a daily basis so these things are not being done in secret. O God arise and let your enemies and the enemies of Ghana be scattered.
We have extremely long way to go as a nation. How can a country be developed with people with such a mindset? Poverty cannot be used as the reason. It is simply wickedness, absence of fellow feeling, lack of patriotism and selfishness in the highest order. Cry our beloved country.
THIS DAYS I DONT KNOW WHAT OUR SECRET SERVICE DO IN THIS COUNTRY EVEN IF WE STILL HAVE THEM. OUR SECURITY IS SO LOOSE. HOW CAN THIS HAPPEN? AND WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS IMPORTANT STATE PROPERTY? PEOPLE ARE ONLY INTRESTED IN COLLECTING TOLLS AND DONT CARE OF WHAT HAPPENS IN THEIR AREA OF OPERATION. DAY IN DAY OUT PEOPLE ARE STEALING CABLES WE HAVE USED THE STATE FUNDS TO BUY AND WE GO AND REPLACE THEM WITHOUT ARRESTING AND PUNISHING THEM. IT IS ***barred word*** THAT WILL LET HUMAN BEINGS GO LOOSE THE BOLTS AND NUTS ON THE ADOMI BRIDGE OF ALL PLACES AND THIS WAS NOT DONE IN A DAY YET WE HAVE SECURITY WHO ARE PAID MONTHLY WITH MY TAX THIS IS SO PAINFUL. I TELL YOU WE HAVE PEOPLE WHO BUY THEM AND THEY ARE LIVING HERE WITH US. ONE DAY WE WILL WAKE UP TO SEE THAT ALL THE BRIDGE IS GONE. NO WONDER MOST OF OUR BRIDGES ARE ALL WEAK IN THIS COUNTRY. MOST OF THE RAILS ON GUTTERS ARE ALL STOLEN. OUR SECURITY MUST WAKE UP.
pure maddness
