Audio Attachment:Listen to Gabby Asare Otchere Darko and Dr. Omane Boamah |
Saturday, September 24th edition of Joy FMs news analysis programme, Newsfile, turned dramatic when the Executive Director of Danquah Institute, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko lost his cool referring to a co-panelist as stupid.
The civil discussion on the celebration of Founders Day led to the shocking outburst when the Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Omane Boamah described Dr. J.B. Danquah, a founding father of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as a CIA agent.
Editor-In-Chief of the New Crusading Guide, Malik Kweku Baako, in his contribution, had posited that the issue of whether Ghana should be a unitary state or a republican state which was competitively fought over, had somewhat contributed to the situation where some people across the political divide have unfairly treated other founders of the country like Dr JB Danquah, a founding member of the United Party (UP) an antecedent of the NPP, by refusing to recognize the roles they played in Ghanas independence.
According to Mr. Baako, historically (from 1920-1947), it will be unfair for some not to recognize the positive contributions of JB Danquah.
Dr. Omane Boamah immediately chipped in that the negatives of Dr. JB Danquah far outweigh his positive contribution to Ghana and cited his secessionist in the Eastern region, JFK ordeal and his status as a classified CIA agent.
Gabby who was obviously infuriated by the deputy ministers description of JB Danquah as a CIA Agent, hit back calling him stupid.
You sit on a live program and refer to a founding father of this country as a CIA agent without any evidence, what is this stupidity? You are supposed to be an intellect and I find it difficult to sit down with people who churn out this, he interjected.
Dr. Omane Boamah also jumped into the fray insisting that JB Danquah is no founder of this country; he is a classified CIA agent.
The host, Samson Ladi Ayenini, then asked Gabby to apologize for using an insulting word on air or leave the studios since that was the rule of the house.
The rule we are dealing with here is that you apologise for insulting comment or you walk off the set, the host maintained.
But the Deputy Minister then retorted if he will not apologize to me leave him, this is the NPPs insulting attitude; Nana Akomea did it and he did not apologize.
An uncompromising Gabby responded, I will walk off the set and accepted that option stating that intellectual discussions should not involve people like Dr. Omane Boamah.
When you want us to have an intellectual programme like this, you dont bring people like this. I am not going to apologise, I can apologise to the audience but not him. He insults J.B. Danquah and you want me to apologise to him? I am not going to do that, why should I do that? If that is what you want I will walk out on your programme, I wont do it, he said.
He however, returned after some several minutes and apologized to listeners and Dr. Omane-Boamah but maintained that the Deputy Ministers claim of Dr. J. B Danquah being a CIA agent was false.
