Former President John Rawlings has for the first time openly showed his support for President John Mahama, saying he has revived the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) chances of winning this year’s elections.

Addressing the Volta Regional House of Chiefs in Ho on Wednesday, the NDC founder said: “Something positive has no doubt emerged of late. Prior to the demise of our late President [John Evans Atta Mills], there was a lot of nervousness; there was a lot of anxiety amongst the governing party about how much of a chance they stood in the forthcoming election.”

The former leader noted that President Mahama has brought a spark to the Presidency which hitherto was missing and could have cost NDC this election. “The emergence of John Mahama has also added a spark to the governing party and therefore reduced the old fear and anxiety; in other words, he has brought on board possibility of also winning the election,” he added.

He said the “nervousness” that used to exist within the party was stressful for most people including him. However, things have changed over the past few weeks since Mahama took over the Presidency.

Mr. Rawlings said “divine intervention created a great deal of goodwill for him [Mahama] on his [Mills’] demise and also public sympathy also served a fine purpose in helping to ignite the hope within the party.”

Over the last three-and-a-half years, Rawlings has never been in the good books of some NDC officials due to a bad blood that flowed between him and late President Mills. The situation aggravated when reports became rife that the former first family is behind the formation of the National Democratic Party (NDP) of which the former first lady has been highly tipped to be the flagbearer of the party aimed at destabilizing the ruling party.
