A political science lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr Edward Brenya, has questioned Nana Akufo-Addo’s leadership qualities after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag bearer said the party would say ‘thank you’ to any member who decides to quit as a result of losing an internal election.
During the Greater Accra leg of his campaign tour, the NPP flag bearer said members who quit after losing internal polls were not true members.
"Our party selects leaders though internal elections. I, myself, was elected through such a process. True party people stay with the party whether they win or lose. My colleague Alan Kyerematen, who I beat in our primaries, is still here with me. He even speaks on my behalf. However, if you lose internal elections and you get disgruntled and decide to leave the party, then you are not a true NPP member. So, if you say you are quitting the party because you lost an election, we will say: 'Thank you very much for your services, you go, we will stay and fight the fight and make the way to bring the victory to the NPP.' We don't give up, we don't fret, come what may, we are solidly behind the Elephant," the three-time flag bearer told party members at a rally at Shiabu, Dansoman, in the Ablekuma West constituency on Tuesday, 4 October.
But speaking to Class News, Dr Brenya said this kind of posturing raises more questions about the kind of leadership Nana Akufo-Addo will offer Ghanaians once elected as president.
"He is already being questioned that he is not the type that can unify people. I don't think that whatever has happened with Afoko, Kwabena Agyapong and others should have happened if Nana Akufo-Addo, right from the beginning, had actually exercised a level of [commitment] to unify people. He would have been able to handle it. NPP is not the first party to have seen these kinds of things that emerged but what have we seen? ...Other people were sacked in constituencies and it is going on and on. Now we have people that are going independent and the only thing you can tell them is 'thank you because you are not patriotic'? What kind of leadership is that? ... He needs to look at the human side of issues and remember that winning elections is about numbers and you do everything that it takes to get the numbers to support you," he stated.

Dr. what? Is he a political scientist? Winning elections is about numbers but you cannot win with members who are not committed to your cause. You cannot spend all of our energy on a few members disgruntled over elections. No one likes to lose but the most important thing is to work for the party. There is no clearer message that telling those disgruntled over elections to go ahead with their plans to leave the party. A leader must be bold, decisive and strong. That is what we are seeing in Nana. He is the best of the choices we have in December.
Mr lecturer Nana said it all leave your classroom political reasoning and face reality..thank you to all who out of their selfish interest decide to go solo
I think that is the best thing any good leader will say after he had tried his best and still to no avail.mr lecturer the issue is not about leadership;rather individual selfishness.
Dr Brenya, I disagree with you. This is not about leadership but about the principles and values, NPP stand for. So you want NANA to go begging those who want to leave the party after being defeated in elections? WHAT IS THE RULE OF THE GAME THEN? You are plainly wrong. Do you measure leadership qualities on that basis? No, no. i begin to doubt your PhD? wHERE DID YOU OBTAIN IT FROM? I hope it was not bought.
Look at nana's head, like adui.
Dr Lecturer, Mr.Afoko ,Mr K. Agyapong and Mr. Crabb did not quite they were suspended.None of them has said he is quitting, Please we dont just wake up and comment anything. As your statues are please add a little common sense to view because equal people like you are also listening. A member lost election thought has been cheated, what is the next line of action.petition or you go to court not to quite. Know that there is a difference between party in power and party in opposition. In power you are being fed by the party wait till you are in opposition
THE SAME LANGUAGE FROM ALL HIS SUPPORTERS, YOU HAVE LOST THE LAST ELECTION INSTEAD OF ATTRACTING MORE MEMBERS YOU KEEN IN SACKING MEMBERS WITH ARROGANCE. I SEE NPP IN OPPOSITION FOR A EVERY LONG TIME
Nana Addo is really a great leader. What would have happened to NPP if Afoko and Kwabena Agyapong were still at post? The NPP would have been digging its own grave.
Nana Kweku well said the NDC think they are united because they are in power wasn't Nana Konadu a founding member of their party when she decided to leave who went to beg her, the NPP is fed up with all these useellless talk from these so called lectures who can't even handle their own family issues they get up and talk about the NPP with a membership of over 4million one person decide to go independent and so what. what Nonseesenseee
is this Lecturer sick or what..We dont need such leadership. He is our leader not our mother. He has to call a spade a spade. We are tired of leaders sweet talking us into power. This is the man he is and we all know he can transform Ghana.Give him the chance, whatever way he can do it,we should give him the chance.By fire by force,Ghana has to be better than this.
