The Head of the Political Science Department, University of Ghana, Legon, Dr. Bossman Asare, has said that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is likely to clinch a landslide victory in the forthcoming polls.
This, he said, would be made possible because of the inability of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to manage the economy and other resources of the country as expected.
He disclosed this while speaking at a roundtable conference themed, ‘Expanding the frontiers of electoral politics in Ghana’ yesterday hosted by the department.
Many think-tanks and scholars were in attendance at the function.
Speaking on the subject, “the different political parties, presidential candidates and their political platforms,” he observed that the two major political parties have maintained their candidates from the 2012 elections, adding that with the diminishing influence of the third parties, it is likely that Ghanaians would witness a first round victory.
“The NPP candidate is contesting for the third time and it appears with economic challenges the country has been experiencing in recent times, this candidate exudes so much confidence in the electorate to vote for him and a vice presidential candidate, who has persistently been a thorn in the flesh of the ruling government,” he noted.
He predicted that the 2016 election was definitely going to pull surprises for the first time since independence, adding that the 2016 election will have a divided government for the first time since independence.
The academic described Alhaji Bawumia as a candidate who has brought lots of attraction to the NPP due to his knowledge about the economy, but expressed disappointment that he has become a figure for insults and all forms of attacks from government and the NDC.
Dr. Bossman Asare further explained that incumbency advantage may not always be a winning ticket for government in power in every situation, especially when people feel dissatisfied with its performance.
“NDC has the President of the Republic as their candidate. No sitting President has lost election in Ghana’s fourth republic; nonetheless the reality is that the environment now looks different,” he noted.
He mentioned that much as the ruling NDC during its tenure of office has embarked on a number of infrastructural projects, it was not enough to overturn the very high rate of unemployment, poor management of the economy, power crisis and the high incidence of corruption that has engulfed the country.
The Director, Africa Region-International Initiative for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), Prof. Adebayo Olukoshi, said that Africa has lost trail of the ideals of the founding fathers of the continent who made sacrifices to fight for independence from the colonial masters.
He blamed the continent’s present state on greed of its leaders who rather exploit their people.

Bossman the NPP man... all his students know his political leanings, so this comes as no surprise... I would have expected however, that as the current head of the Political Science Dept at Legon, he would be more circumspect...
its quite unfortunate when people are happy the government is going for loans. the pple over subscribe because of the high interest rates attached to the bonds given to the government. hu pays for the loans and what at all are the money been used for . change is really coming quick
Mr Prof, some predictions are more dangerous than violence. what if the NPP fails to win? don't you think they can dispute it and say by a University lecturer's predictions, there is no way NPP could lose.? Quite dangerous, methinks.
NO WONDER AKUFFO ADDO HAD THIRD CLASS IN ECONOMICS BECAUSE HE AND THIS WEASLE THINKS ALIKE. AND ANY SERIOUS PARENT WILL ASK HIS WARD TO STAY PUT,, RATHER THAN WALK INTO THE LECTURE HALL OF SUCH. ALL OVER THE WORLD,, I HAVE NEVER HEARD OR SEEN ANY ECONOMIST WHO INCLUDE CEMENT IN THE FOOD BASKET AND CALCULATE IT TO INFLATION. BUT BAWUMIAH DID THIS. AND FOR A HEAD OF POLITICAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT IN NO MEAN A CITADEL, BUT LEGON......TO PAT HIM ON THE SHOULDER... THEN THERE IS A LOOMING CRISIS. WHAT KIND OF GRADUATES WILL THEY BE CHURNING OUT? AND HE EVEN TALKS ABOUT MISMANAGEMENT OF THE ECONOMY.... AS THE YARDSTICK WITH WHICH TO MEASURE THE PERFORMANCE OF THIS GOVERNMENT. SOMETHING AKUFFO ADDO AND BAWUMIAH HAS EMPLOYED BUT DIDN'T WORK FOR THEM. ALL THOSE ARGUMENTS WERE SHOT DOWN BY THE ISSUE OF THE EURO BOND. WHICH DEVELOPMENT PARTNERS OVER SUBSCRIBED IN EXCESS OF OVER 4 MILLION EUROS. A SITUATION WHICH EVERY ECONOMIST'S POINTED TO BE POSITIVE. YET THIS INTELLECTUALLY DISHONEST LECTURER,,AND HIS POLITICAL LARKEYS,,,WERE DAZED BY THE WAY AND MANNER SETH TEKPER DISBURSED THE FUNDS TO BENEFIT THE COUNTRY. AND SO HIS BRILLIANT BU.F.OO.N CLAIMS THE NDC INTENDS TO USE IT FOR CAMPAIGNING PURPOSE. YOU CAN PHOOL SOME PEOPLE SOMETIMES, BUT NOT ALL THE PEOPLE ALL THE TIME.. THE MAJORITY OF GHANAIANS ARE NOT NPP. SO THEY CAN THINK RIGHT.
man proposes, but God disposes. John Mahatma's loss at the poll will mean today's Ghanaian is only looking at his circumstances today! Whether we like it or not, that will set the country back four years. The good hearted men and women seeking the forward march of Ghana will vote to retain JM, for the sake of Ghana today and its future!!!
The lecturer is just reminding us of 2000 and 2008. the same thing is happening. Hmmm is unfortunate to say change is coming! Some of us have never voted a losing candidate. Intact Mahama will lose mark it anywhere.
DEFEAT IS COMING TO HIT NDC LIKE WALL OF JERICO
Since when did this ediot become a pollster?
yes surprises are likely to occur. However in the event of defeat affecting any of the candidates, lets now make the noise for them to concede defeat. So that our nation can go forward. Whether the incumbent or the leading opposition figure the reality is that one will loose. But let us compel them to make a public declaration now. It's very important for the peace of our land.
still day dreaming.
