Mr. John Peter Amewu, the Volta Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, (NPP) has described the work on some parts of the Eastern Corridor road as a “waste of tax payers’ money”.
He said though work on the Asikume-Have stretch was yet to be completed; the road had already developed major defects and alleged that the contractors were using the wrong grade stones in their bid to cut cost.
Mr Amewu, who took journalists on tour of the road, said it was unbelievable that despite the huge cost of the project, it was ridden with potholes and it had stalled.
He said his checks indicated that the asphalt overlay was three inches thick, instead of the recommended six inches and questioned the Government’s commitment to the project.
At Peki, Mr Amewu led the media to a spot being fixed by contractors and said it was unfortunate that just a few months after construction the stretch developed grave defects.
The Regional Chairman said the National Democratic Congress was, therefore, just “wasting tax payers’ money” on shoddy work with the intent to lure electorate for votes.

Mr John Peter Amewu, as a voltarian myself, am very greatful for u facing the ndc and their deceitful actions in the region. CHANGE IS A MUST
Mr. John Amewu as a citizen of Ghana and a Voltarian, I don't think you it was necessary for you to wait until the NPP is in power before you directly demand explanation from the Contractors as to why the asphalt overlay was three inches instead of six inches. If I were you as a concerned citizen I would look for the contract specifications and used it personally as an evidence to demand such explanation. If you have not done that then bringing this issue out is just one one of those politicking gimmicks. Three years ago when the Abofo Community near Achimota, township road were being upgraded and asphalted, a concerned citizen who was not satisfied with the nature of work being done approach the Department of Urban Roads of the Ministry of Roads and Highways and demand a copy of the Contract as a concerned citizen and a tax payer.Upon receipt of a copy of the contract,he used the legal document to challenged the Contractor and the Assembly man for the Abofo Area. This action of the Concerned citizen and taxpayer resulted in the job done according to specification and value for money. This friend did not rush to the press to score cheap political point. Another instance when a clinic was being built in Awate, a community in the Volta Region, the Community Chief , was so keen in monitoring the project so that the community was not deprived of value for money. He ensured that the project was executed according to the contract specifications. I think Mr.John Amewu will learn from these two practical examples and act as a concern citizen instead of a political activist.
