President John Mahama has ridiculed Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's “one-village-one-dam” campaign promise describing it as a mark of ignorance and hopelessness on the part of the New Patriotic Party (NPP ) presidential candidate.
Saying that Nana Akufo-Addo "does not know what he is talking about," the President revealed that the dams which Nana Akufo-Addo had promised the people of the north are dugout dams.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Kanjarga Community Day Senior High School (SHS ) in the Builsa South District of the Upper East Region Tuesday, the President said, "When we ( NDC) talk of dams, we talk of real irrigation dams and not the dugout dams somebody is talking about."
He, therefore, urged the people of the north especially farmers not buy into Nana Akufo-Addo's promise as it was only meant to win their votes
"There is a confusion in the minds of some people about what a dam is. And so when somebody says one village one dam, he really doesn’t know what he is talking about," Mahama said of his main contender in the December 7 presidential election.
Explaining, he said, “Most of the time they are referring to the small dugouts we have that are used mostly for livestock watering. These dugouts do not have a water source. They are normally fed by rainfall during the raining season and then in the dry season; they hold the water so that the animals can get water to drink until the next raining season starts."
Taking a look at what he called viable dams, President Mahama said, "The dams that are viable that we use for irrigation normally are generated from a stream or a small river and what you do is you build a dam across it and hold back the water so that they are able to hold enough water for irrigation and dry season farming and not all village has that kind of water sourceand so you cannot say you are building a dam in every single village.”
SADA already working on dams
President Mahama said the Savanna Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) had already embarked on a programme to provide irrigation dams in the Savanna belt.
“SADA is embarking on the provision of irrigation dams all over the Savanna parts of the country. They have done a study of all the prominent water sources and for those that are viable, we are going to barrage dams across them so that we hold back the water during the dry season for dry season gathering,” the President said.
NDC has best programmes
Earlier on Monday , President Mahama had adressing a rally at Garu where he said the NDC had the best programmes to advance agriculture in the north.
He said the Tamne Dam project , which was be cht sod for work to negin a couplecof months ago, would be completed to bring relief to farmers.
Water from the dam is expected to irrigate about 3,250 acres of land and promote an all-year-round farming.
It is expected that about 5,400 direct and indirect jobs would be created following the construction of the dam. It would boost farming activities in the Bawku Municipality, the Garu-Tempane, Binduri and Pusiga districts.
President Mahama assured the people that work on the Bolgatanga - Bawku road which had been awarded on contract would be pursued to its logical conclusion.
"It is going to be a first class road," the President told the people.

Hmm, now Mr incompetent is defining dams. Maybe he can also help us with the definition of Ford Expedition. Let me tell you Mr incompetent president that to us it is not about nomenclature and will never be. Even if what Nana Addo is proposing is poly-tank dams, if only it can do the job in improving agriculture and bettering the lives of our people, we are all for it. Maybe you forget, that the cost of the guinea fowls enjoying fresh air in Burkina Faso because Ghana has become too hot for them, could finance half the project that visionary leader is proposing.
John Mahama was part of NDC parliamentarians who mocked the discovery of oil by the Kufour Administration saying it was palm oil. So it is not surprising to hear these statements from the president.
At least those dams will not disaapear like the trees and guinea fowls by SADA that disappeared into thin air. Mr President, or errhm Mr Soon to be Ex President, can you please speak to your policies and leave other peoples business alone? Ahh a Massa, if you can do a better dam what logic are you using to say that another person cannot do same. I cant think far.
Sounds like the president is the ***barred word*** one
This President de3 menhuu ne so kowhinii da. He will not think to come up with any idea but as soon as some one comes up with any idea, he will go all length to spend our monies on expesive adverts against it but will later turn round to say he will rather do it. He in fact is a us e l ess President ever. Kowhi nii. Change is coming.
Steve oh Steve Gyimi paaa nie hmmmmm
So that is all the common sense you have. insulting the sitting president he lack common sense. people like are the reason our country is at where it is. you only interested in what you will gain as an individual when npp win power otherwise you would have remove that political sense you are wearing and see things clearly.
It's clear that a person mocks at a fellows ideas when that person does not understand the vision behind the idea. also common sense after all is basic but not common to all. We have our differences but should never "mock" at others Vision when you don't understand. Nana proposed free SHS and you condemn him that its not possible only to make a U-turn. so Mr. President, if for Christ sake you don't know do not condemn. LEAVE IT TO GHANAIANS TO DECIDE. Importantly, so far you have not come out with any vision at all to make life better for Ghanaians and redeem us from this hardship under your government.
They did the same to the FREE SHS policy, only to turn around to say they will do same. WHAT DO WE SEE? MESSED UP! The people of the North have seen NDC POLITICS OF DECEIT! NDC POLITICS OF MAKE THEM ALWAYS POOR AND RULE THEM! NDC LIES! NEVER AGAIN. CHANGE IS COMING!
@Ruby, it is not that we have not seen an NPP government before oooh. They came and we saw what they did. We can again testify to what is now happening in their party. So no amount of insults will make your candidate win. As for insults, you guys are champions. But the sad thing is that, these insults will keep perpetually keep you in opposition. In fact, we are done with the Gold Coast guys when it comes to the Presidency. JM will win and you'll be sad for the rest of your life. Unfortunately, your candidate has divided the NPP and has introduced violence which you are here demonstrating. JM is a peaceful, visionary and hardworking gentleman. As you know gentlemen don't quarrel and insult. For your information, Kufuor asked us to vote for someone who will not bring division. Again not to vote for a person FULL of tension. He knew 'opana's' behaviour and we are doing just that on December 7. Ey3 Zu! JM Toaaaaaaaaassssoooooo!
