The Free Senior High School policy proposed by the Akufo-Addo-led government may not be sustainable, KB Asante, a retired diplomat, has said.
Although he expressed optimism about the proposed implementation of the policy, he doubted the government would be able to sustain it.
President Nana Akufo-Addo on Saturday, 11 February announced that the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme promised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prior to the December 7 elections will commence in September this year.
Mr Akufo-Addo, who was the Special Guest of Honour at the 60th anniversary celebration of Okuapeman School, indicated in his speech that “government will fund the cost of public senior high schools for all those who qualify for entry from September this year”.
He explained: “By free SHS, we mean that, in addition to tuition which is already free, there will be no admission fees, no library fees, no science centre fees, no computer lab fees, no examination fees, no utility fees; there will be free textbooks, free boarding and free meals, and day students will get a meal at school for free.”
The president further indicated that the policy would also cover agricultural, vocational, and technical institutions at the high school level.
But speaking in an interview on Accra FM on Monday, 13 February, Mr Asante said: “We voted for a government and we think it will competently administer the country. If the money [were] not there, I don’t think the government would have announced it, so, let us assume that the money will be there.
“From the little I know about financing, I do not think we can sustain it, but I am not in charge and I don’t have all the facts and figures, so let’s hope for the best.”

the face of negative thinker
Ah why? Lets ask him. If his friend Nkrumah's policy of Free SHS for the North has succeeded until now why wont the similar policy for the entire country succeed?
Please lets be careful on the way we response to opposing view. The old man only express his side of the issue. May be he is doubting because of the past experience. Please let respect our elders. The old man does not deserve this .Please let us not react negatively to people who do not side with our policies. especially respected and accomplished Ghanaian s like the man in question. Please those involved should bow down their head in shame.Let us not be like the NDC people .
What is wrong with this old fuuuuuuul. To brand buses can be sustain, pay dubious judgement debts can be sustained, SADA, SUBA, ISOFOTON, Brazi fiasco all can be sustain. But to implement something that will alleviate the plight of the poor can't be sustained. These are people who in their time had almost everything free. Whats wrong with the black man?
Why is it not sustainable .Why?In the past several years, the Ghanaian treasury has leaked like a basket into which water is constantly poured. If all the blatant kleptomaniac st3al1ng is stopped or at least reduced to the barest minimum ,why is free education not sustainable. The key to development in any state is education. Let the man do his work.Nana Addo has a great opportunity to be a truly great leader and he must seize it. After John Mahama anything will look good but Nana must really make a change that will be felt 40 years from now.
I quite remember you defended Mahama's copianto FSHS policy. Why now the policy has faded on the face of Akuffo Addo's government.
E hard ooo, as recently as 1981 we entered the university and paid NOTHING, infact government was giving us free accommodation, meals and later 'Bangla' that is chop money of 42 cedis a week in lieu of food. What went wrong??? Sixth form was also free, all you needed was a good head!!
The oldman has spoken his mind but that doesnt mean thats the truth so u can decide to be with him or disagree with him that is ur own wahala, he has said his mind and he said we hope for the best and thats all we all hope for so let the old man be wai
What's wrong with Ghanaians? president said I will do this,(ABCD) we have person's doubt about that, nagetivity is too much we should think positive please my people and encourage the president to do more, school should be priority then everything to get rad of person's on the street.
Don't mind this good for nothing old Fuuuuul. In their time it was sustainable, but now it can't be sustained. If you don't anything good to offer just ***barred word***.
