The Member of Parliament for Akwatia in the Eastern region, Mercy Ama Sey is disappointed after she was subjected to public ridicule over her rendition of the English language
According to her, speaking good English cannot equate performance thus should not be the yardstick for people to judge her.
The first time MP who beat National Democratic Congress (NDC) Baba Jamal in the December 2016 parliamentary election was ridiculed in the media following her address to mark Ghana’s 60th anniversary celebration in her constituency.
It is believed that Mr Jamal who was also the Deputy Minister for Employment & Labour Relations is the one fueling such ridicule considering how the two slugged it out during the campaign.
Mr. Jamal polled 15,905 votes while Ama Sey whom he described as a hairdresser garnered 21,433 of the total valid votes cast.
This generated controversy with Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Otiko Afisa Djaba condemning the act in no uncertain terms.
She has launched a new gender campaign dubbed: ‘He For She’ and has made Baba Jamal the lead campaigner.
Madam Djaba is convinced once he bears the title of “an Honourable” for being a former MP; he would make a good ambassador to push the campaign.
In an interview on Adom News, Madam Ama Sey said she is not bothered about the public ridicule since English is not her mother tongue.
She noted that being a form 4 leaver and a hairdresser is not be an excuse not to improve on herself especially being in Parliament but it should not be the yardstick for her performance.
“I wonder why people are ridiculing me on social media. If you are fluent in the queens language correct me don’t laugh at me” she bemoaned.
However, Ama Sey promised the next time she mounts the podium to address students and people in her constituency, “I will speak fluent English to shame critics.

Leave the woman alone,English should not be the yard stick to enter parliament, people that don't flow can also do something to move the country forward, even the educated are worse in stealing, npp women in paliment draw her to your self and make her feel good, this is also the work of the kingdom.Krobo Edusei made great impact.
Listen to a typical Scott(Scottish Man) speaking English and you will applaud this lady. They are a few kilometers away from the native English speakers. We are nautical miles away and you want her to speak the the Queen? I think it is about time we dropped English as official language and use a local language or a combination of local languages as our official language
some id-i-o-ts in ghana think speaking good english is tantamount to being intelligent and wise. these are people who have inferiotiy complex. the mp was elected by her constituents who are not english-speaking anyway. what she needs is native wisdom which she has. so what is the problem with those who are pre-occupied with the english language. madam don't mind them!
Leave her alone . Is a akwatia an english speaking town . Competence is the key . Am so proud of her . Honourable i am behind u in prayers . Ur detracters will be put to shame .
They can cry or laugh about her English all they like. She was voted by her people not because of her English. Human Quality over English
Learn basic English sentences such as : a) I am happy because .................. b) I am not happy because.................. c) I want to go home but ................. d) I am late so............... This is the time your mind and body is ready or prepared to study, so don't give up! Good luck and all the best.
Please someone should tell me something here. Is she not among the MEN they said ,they had? English is our official language and she should speak standard English.
Listening and watching the video,l don't understand why people are ridiculing her. Yes, parliamentary work, like any other work, may have set procedures, but l believe this woman can learn. Here in the US,one is trained when hired to do a job irrespective of your initial knowledge. So this lady can quickly learn how parliament works. Let us remember, no one is born a parliamentarian. Having a degree is a plus but not the ultimate. We have so many educated folks yet Africa lags behind.why?
Even if she cant speak good english she was still able to beat those who speak good english in the election. This tells she is more competent with those who contested vying for the seat. Most Ghanaian s scholars are just educated illiterates. Am proud of you Mum and i love you soo much. This tells God can crown you a King no matter your status. was Kwame Nkrumah fluent with English language? But look at the great things he achieve for our motherland and compare to our era where we have a lot of scholars but they cant even manage and expand what Nkrumah help to build. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE WESTERN WORLD AND AFRICA IS THAT AFRICA SCHOLARS HAVE FULL THEORY SH*T IN THEIR HEAD BUT THEY CANT PUT IT INTO GOOD USE. THEY ONLY HAPPY WITH THE BIG TITTLES ADDED TO THEIR NAMES. AFRICA SCHOLAR WITH PHD CANT BE COMPARED TO A WESTERN PERSON WITH A VOCATIONAL SKILLS. LET WORK TOGETHER AND MOVE OUR COUNTRY FORWARD AND STOP THIS NASTY CRITICISMS. I TELL U MOST OF THE WESTERN PEOPLE WHO WORK IN OUR BIG ENGINEERING FIRMS HAVE ONLY VOCATIONAL AND APPRENTICESHIP SKILLS BUT THEY ARE BEING PAID LARGE SUMS OF MONEY AS COMPARE TO THEIR COUNTERPART WITH PHD QUALIFICATION BECAUSE THEY CANT EVEN REMOVER BOLT AND NUTS. Most of this people who are mockery this woman have parents who not even educated at all and they making fund of someone. I pity them.
DC Kwame Kwakye was one of the best performing people during Kwame Nkruma's regime but could not even speak a quarter of the English this woman spoke
