General Secretary of the People's National Convention (PNC) Atik Mohammed has advised the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Alban Bagbin to review his decision to vie for the flagbearer position in the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking on Peace FM's Kokrokoo, Atik Mohammed was emphatic that the time is not yet ripe for Hon. Bagbin to aspire for such a position.
The Second Deputy Speaker is believed to be nursing interest in leading the party to contest the 2020 general elections.
He's reported to have said in an interview that one of his dreams since "Form 5" of his educational ladder is to become the President of the Republic.
Hon. Bagbin's name has been widely mentioned together with other members of the opposition party - Mr. Ekow Spio Garbrah, Former Trade and Industry Minister and Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, Minority Leader in Parliament - who are all potential candidates for the position.
But according to Atik Mohammed, the fact that he (Bagbin) has a dream to become President doesn't make him qualified to lead the party to the 2020 contest.
“When we were all growing up, everybody had a dream. Some even, along the line, changed dreams and so on, and so forth. But the fact that you dreamed about it doesn’t mean you’re best fit to become a President…There’s more to becoming a President than merely having a “form 5” dream," he advised.
To Atik, the suitable candidate to lead the NDC into 2020 is former President John Dramani Mahama.
He noted that the opposition party will be riding on the legacy of the former President to campaign during the elections and so it is best to elect him as the party's Presidential candidate.
He advised the NDC not to make any mistake by selecting a different candidate because Mr. Mahama is "their best bet against Nana in 2020” asking the NDC, “in 2020, what are you going to run on? It’s his legacy that you will run on. So, who will better sell the legacy than the owner of the legacy himself…He’s the most popular amongst all the names that have been mentioned so far”.

JM was right about NPP using Bawumia. Northerners do not belong to NPP. Osafo Marfo and all the Ashanti's have more power than Bawumia.
The question is why are so many northners suddenly falling over themselves to become Presidents of Ghana when we all know some are just nation wreckers and thiffs in the name of Jon Mahama .
I am a full blooded Akan living in Kumasi but I hate the insulting comments of some so called Akans against our northern brothers on this platform. I know most of these comments are coming from non-Akans who disguise themselves as Akans just to create disaffection for Akans and eventually the NPP which is perceived to be an Akan dominated party. In the run-up to the 2016 elections the NDC adopted this strategy but that strategy was destroyed by Mr. Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP when he issued a directive that any so called Akan caught insulting a northerner should be given some strong beatings. Though it was hash, it really helped to halt the wicked plans of the NDC. I wish those so called Akans insulting our brothers could be identified and dealt with physically in order to stop this N. O. N. S. E. N. S. E. from these cowards who just want to foment trouble in this peaceful country.
Akan people should not entertain these p3p3fuo who do not contribute proportionally to the economy and yet when they had the chance to rule, squandered our wealth.
Bagbin is the president of watchmen's association. haruna is president of the chichinga sellers' association
I hear formal president Rawlings is looking for somebody to push to take over the NDC, if you are the one they are using for that project then i petty you. By the way this is a democratic contest one man one vote. I wish you well, after all you have nothing to loose if you are humiliated at the congress so bring it on.
Why should I take the advice of Atik, when he could not even complete a nomination form. His party did not even score 2% in the 2016 election.
THESE NTAFUO/PEPEFOU THINKS AKANS ARE FOOOOOLLLS TO ELECT THEM AS PRESIDENTS.WHAT DO YOU PRODUCE FROM YOUR DRY LAND.APART FROM CARRY PEOPLES ***barred word***,POUNDING FUFU,WATCHMEN ,ARMED ROBBERS WHAT NEXT.THEIFS.NOT PAYING DUTIES OF IMPORTED GOODS ,DOG EATERS.
Hmmmmmm look at Bagbin too!!! Any way if John Mahama was president who can't be.
