Former President John Dramani Mahama has said he was honest to Ghanaians about the state of Ghana’s economy in the run-up to the 2016 elections but the rosy promises of the then flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) swayed votes in his favour resulting in the loss of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He noted that he had an “incumbency disadvantage” adding that he had managed the economy and “I knew what the economy could give the people and I told the people the truth that we need more hard work to be able to get out of where we are; my opponent promised heaven and you have the constraints of not being able to promise all the rosy things he was doing”.
He continued: “…The people made a choice and voted me out.”
However, Mr Mahama pointed out that “it is part of the learning process for all of us”.
For him, “if he [President Nana Akufo-Addo] is able to deliver on his promises, good; if he is not able too, the people would have learnt that not all that glitters is gold”.
He made this known on Thursday, May 4 at the three-day World Economic Forum (WEF) 2017 being held in Durban, South Africa, when asked to share some of the things that could have led to his loss in the 2016 elections.
Meanwhile, Mr Mahama has charged leaders to be accountable to citizens in order to build trust in public institutions.
He explained that citizens are entitled to know what public funds are used for. For him, this is one of the important ways to build confidence in public institutions of the country.
“Every month when I work, part of my salary is taken as tax, so as a citizen I want to be sure that whoever has been elected into government is going to be accountable on how he uses that money to improve my life,” he said.
He was of the view that leaders must be held accountable to the people that voted them into office.

You were too corrupt... Every sector under your watch was collapsing. Nothing was working for you. By the way who killed Prof Mills? You are not truthful as you are claiming...... Why did you receive that ford car as a bribe from Kanazoe? Wrong judgement and corruption. You are simply incompetent and corrupt. Too many of your appointees were stealing under your watch. Go and look at the Auditor General reports.
papa, fa wo nkwa sia sem fi hen do atse? yere dwen, ah what the hell is wrong with you? her, leave us okay? gyaa hen ma y3 dwen ye ho iiiii? aponkye banyin ahahahahah
so this platform is for insults ah? please let some sense of decency and decorum prevail here. today its mahama, tomorrow you'll all be asking others to respect Nana as past Prez because he did his best for the country and not necessarily because Ghana became heaven under his watch. Decency please!
Mahama should shutupp. You show your incompetence any time you speak.
Oheneba your JM is worthless and no Ghanaian except you fo*ls with no life no future will follow him. Ghana will never miss John mahama for what? What policy did he put down for Ghanaians to benefit? America was built on good policies not create, loot and share not family ,friends and cronies and not where by a president's brother can import equipment and dodge import taxes by using dud checks to the detriment of the nation not where the president's brother is not paying his workers social security contributions ,not where the sitting president and his party use state transport to carry their followers to rally grounds without paying thereby rendering the state transport bankrupt. No patriotic Ghanaian will ever miss John mahama and his ndc party of kriminals and nation wreckers except those who have lost their minds and fo*ls. Ghana will succeed,Ghana will progress and Prosper , IN GOD WE TRUST. GOD damn evil ndc party.
JDM God Bless You. You were truthful. God made you to lose so that Ghanaians will know your worth. The liars have ***barred word*** us but it won't happen again.
John Dramani Mahama, what did you do in your tenure of office. To oversee massive corruption in your outfit. I don't fancy you a bit. How many people you reprimanded in your tenure. Zero. Because you were the No 1 corrupt person in NDC and you know it. Very bad President.
A word of advice to fellow NDC members. The biggest mistake is to field John Mahama as our candidate for 2020. With his kind of leadership, I really had my doubt if he can ever win an election again in Ghana. If Kwaku Baako is advising u to do that, then think twice. There are so many other Presidential materials that we have. Let's take one for 2020. Assuming he looses, by 2024, he will be marketable,so that when Ghanaians are tired of NPP, then there is an alternative. If we make a mistake and field JDM and he looses, fielding another a new candidate in 2024 will not help the party so please let us think properly over this. I rest my case.
Your incompetence was very obvious. You were basically a nimmmcompoooooop and a dim-witttted president. Nobody in his right mind will vote for a bufffffffooooon like JDM.
Nana succeeded in deceiving Ghanaians and still deceiving them. He and Bawumia now says they have changed Ghanaians lives with 103 achievements in 100 days but now they are in Togo enjoying in big hotels with fat women while Ghanaians sleep in darkness. If you think you are clever in lying that same lies will catch up with you.
